EGAD Bands Together to Collect Bottled Water for Houston

The Space Coast knows all too well the devastation a hurricane can cause. People lose their homes, dearest possessions, and even their lives. As a community, we have learned to prepare and help one another in times of need. We have built one of the most resilient, community-minded, and innovative areas in the country, but only by working together.

The Eau Gallie Arts District stands in solidarity with Houston and is asking for donations of packaged, bottled water to be dropped off at the Eau Gallie Band Shell between now and September 13. The next day, September 14, the trucks will be loaded up and roll toward Houston.

Members of the Next Level Marketing team will be leaving for Houston Texas on September 14 to distribute the collected water.

The band shell is an open, public space available to receive the donations courtesy of the city of Melbourne Parks and Recreation. Everyone is on the honor system to drop their water at the bandshell knowing it will be collected at the end of each day. Collection ends on September 13.

What: Collecting bottled water to donate to Houston, Texas.
Where: Eau Gallie Square Band Shell at your leisure.
When: Friday, September 1-Wednesday, September 13, 2017. Please visit EGAD’s Facebook page for more information. Facebook.com/EauGallie

Rehabilitated Otter Experiences Freedom in Brevard County

Florida Wildlife Hospital (FWH) recently released a North American River Otter.  She and an unrelated female arrived at FWH in April of this year.   Both were orphans and were housed together for most of their time at FWH.  Sadly, the second otter passed away suddenly several weeks ago. Wild animals hide illness well in order to prevent becoming a meal for another animal.  She hid her pneumonia until it was beyond treatment.

Happily, the otter released today remained healthy throughout her time at FWH. During her four month stay, she had a lot to learn.  Swimming was her first challenge to overcome.  Catching live fish in her pool was the next skill to learn.  Once fishing was mastered, it was time to start learning how to catch food that bites back: crabs!  ... She mastered all the skills necessary for survival in the wild.

"Naive otters are more successful if they have other otters to help them learn the ropes of making a living in the wild," said FWH director, Tracy Frampton.

Rescued kangaroo’s first birthday celebrated at Brevard Zoo

Lilly, a once helpless, frail kangaroo rescued and hand-reared by Brevard Zoo staff, turns one year old today. Keepers marked the occasion with a kangaroo-friendly cake made of sweet potato, corn, lettuce and spinach.
Just the size of a jelly bean at birth, a red kangaroo joey typically remains in its mother’s pouch for the first few months of life. Lilly was discovered on the floor of the kangaroo habitat on January 23. Attempts to reunite her with her mother were unsuccessful, so animal care staff made the decision to rear Lilly by hand.

The Zoo was at first cautiously optimistic about Lilly’s survival, but concerns lessened as she reached each milestone. After five months of constant human care and approximately 1,000 bottle feedings, Lilly was reunited with the Zoo’s kangaroo mob in late June.

“Lilly is a testament to the commitment we make to every single animal in our care,” said Michelle Smurl, director of animal programs at the Zoo. “Getting her to where she is today took an incredible amount of work, but it was worth every minute.”
