Cox Conserves Heroes honors Mick Karolick

Mick Karolick, long-time volunteer at Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, was one of three finalists nominated for Cox Conserves Heroes award earlier this year. WFTV Channel 9 and The Trust for Public Land recognized volunteers who create, preserve or enhance shared outdoor spaces.  Nominees had two weeks to collect votes.  The number of votes determined the amount of financial award they would receive for their charity of choice. A total of $20,000 was donated to local environmental non-profits on behalf of the three nominees.  Tom Terry of WFTV was on hand to help recognize the winners. Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, Inc was honored to receive $5000 thanks to Mick’s efforts.

Meerkat pups born at Brevard Zoo

Christmas came a few weeks early to meerkat mom Cashew when she gave birth to three pups on December 4. Each was born with its eyes and ears closed and weighed approximately one ounce.

The little ones, whose sexes are unknown at this time, are living behind the scenes with Cashew, father Kirabo and several other adults; this group is one of three meerkat “mobs” managed by the Zoo’s animal care team. This mob may move to a public-facing habitat in January.

Zoo fans can vote on the pups’ names at brevardzoo.org/meerkat-pups.
Meerkats are highly social carnivores native to the deserts of southwest Africa. Their diet includes insects, scorpions, lizards and fruit.
