Arizona Eye Institute's 28th Anniversary Gala

Arizona Eye Institute's 28th Anniversary Gala

The Arizona Eye Institute is opening its doors on Friday, March 3, for its 28th Anniversary Gala that will feature live eyelid surgeries, and cosmetic services demonstrations.

The annual event is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Food and music will entertain guests, who will receive tours and have their choice of live cosmetic services or eyelid surgery demonstrations that are followed often with related valuable raffles.

"I was only 27 when I came to town and it has been a privilege and an honor to treat this community's vision and beauty needs and desires for 28 years now," said Emilio M. Justo, M.D., the Founder and Medical Director of the Arizona Eye Institute & Cosmetic Laser Center. "We are thrilled to cordially invite the public to join us in celebration of our anniversary."

Dr. Justo has become widely known for his customized refractive laser cataract surgery as well as his success at performing laser eyelid surgeries with natural-looking results, and often insurance authorization. Those eyelid surgeries will be a highlight at the event, as two patients undergo surgery that is streamed live into two lobbies for live viewing.

"I had a lot of trouble looking up - I could not see above my eyelids," said Fran Martin. "I am not someone who would have considered something that is a ‘cosmetic surgery’ on some levels, until my dear friend underwent eyelid surgery with Dr. Justo and the results were incredible."

"Your vision gradually gets obstructed, so you don't even realize what you have lost," Fran added. Ultimately, she herself underwent surgery before a live audience at the 2016 anniversary Gala.  "Dr. Justo and his staff got my insurance to authorize the surgery, which made my decision for me. What I really appreciate is the personal interest they take in you as a person."

Sherry Potts also underwent surgery before a live audience last year. "To be able to see, I had to open my eyes real big," she said. "People often told me that I looked scared. It was important to me that my results looked natural. For me, the big thing was making sure I could continue to drive."

Other demonstrations will feature injectable treatments and soft-tissue fillers, as well as medical grade skin care products all geared to maintain and correct skin health and wrinkles. Stephanie Morlock, one of the few Certified Permanent Cosmetics Professionals in the state, will also demonstrate live eyeliner permanent makeup procedures. ‘Just for Eyes Optical Boutique’ will also be available to showcase the latest in lens technology and new frame fashions.

“MOTORS AND MEALS,” FIRST FUNDRAISER FOR NORTHWEST VALLEY CONNECT

Nonprofit Northwest Valley Connect will hold its first fundraiser on Saturday, March 11, at the R.H. Johnson Rec Center in Sun City West. The event will run from 1:00 to 6:00 that afternoon and will feature food trucks, wine and beer producers, a local car club show, silent auction, basket raffle, ice cream and coffee vendors, children’s activities and a live DJ. The festivities are free to the public and provide multiple opportunities for all members of the family to enjoy themselves.

The event is being underwritten by major sponsors The Wulkan Group, Independent News Media, Sun Health, Birt and Louisa Kellam and Benevilla. Also helping in the underwriter category are DMB/Marley Park, APS, Total Transit, Epcor, PORA and the Sun City West Rec Centers. Additional support is being provided by FirstLight Home Care, SunWest Federal Credit Union, Champs Family Automotive and AMTrust Bank.

The volunteer lineup is headed by Sun City West community advocates Sharon Hettick and Bonnie Boyce-Wilson who serve as co-chairs. They are being supported by Linda Ford, Sharon Ward, Arky Muskato, Jennifer Drago, Ron Auterlade, Frank Joyce, Joanne Thomson, Tom Profico, Paul Herrmann, Darci Nakagawa, Milly Chandler, Kathy Chandler and Tom Bashwiner.

Northwest Valley Connect has just completed its second full year of operation, responding to 3650 calls to its Call Center where trained volunteers “connect” homebound adults and those with limiting mobility issues to an appropriate transportation provider. In some cases, the agency uses its own volunteer drivers to make the trips. “The growth has been explosive,” said Kathy Chandler, Executive Director and Mobility Manager. “Transportation remains the number one challenge for those well enough to live at home but who no longer can drive. These folks need transportation not only to doctors’ appointments but also to shopping and the all-important social activities.”

“We anticipate a very successful fundraiser,” added Ms. Chandler, “and will be using the funds generated to hire a few key staff to help us handle our growth and remain responsive to this critical community need for transportation.”
