About the event’s host and beneficiary: The AED Alliance, a St. Marys-based 501c3 nonprofit, is on a mission to educate the public about the need for AEDs in schools, in public places and at special events. The life-saving heart-shocking devices are the only remedy when someone undergoes Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), which is the most common cause of death in schools. The Alliance is working to ensure there are AEDs in all schools throughout the country by 2014. It’s also setting up its award-winning “Borrow an AED” programs throughout the nation, enabling communities to “sign out” AEDs as needed. St. Marys residents Harold and Becky Cohn founded the Alliance after their 15-year-old son, Andrew, died of SCA following a collision during a baseball game that forced his heart into an abnormal rhythm. If an AED had been available, he would very likely still be alive. Learn more about the Alliance at www.aedalliance.com. |
