School's Out, Knit-in For Scarves in the Park

SCHOOL’S OUT, KNIT-IN: FOR SCARVES IN THE PARK

First graders on up are invited to join us for a day of knitting and doing good. We’ll have tons of yarn, lots of needles, patient instructors, and snacks to bring new and experienced knitters together to create scarves for this year’s “Scarves in the Park”, a community project that provides free scarves, mittens, and hats to those in need.

No experience needed but if you have knitting needles at home we encourage you to bring yours along. Volunteers willing to teach their knitting skills to other should contact ArtHaus at info@arthausdecorah.org

Walk In Flu Clinic

Winneshiek County Public Health is offering a flu clinic to the public. Cost of the vaccine is $30 and is for everyone ages 6 mos. and older. There is no flu mist available this year. It takes two weeks for you to be fully covered against the influenza with the vaccination so please don’t delay and get yourself protected before we head to the holiday season. Don’t delay, get your flu shot now. No appointments necessary.

School's Out, Knit-in for Scarves in the Park

On Friday, November 4, youth and adults are invited to join in creating scarves during a knit-in open house from 10am-4pm at ArtHaus Studio (516 W Water St) for the 2nd Annual Scarves in the Park community giving project. The goal of the knit-in, taking place during an in-service day for Decorah Public Schools, is to give adults as well as first graders on up a chance to share or learn knitting skills to participate in making scarves that will be available later this season for those in need.

Skål to Deck the Tables—The Grand Finale

            The Blue Jeans and Bling Open House will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, in the Steyer Opera House. The evening includes live music with award-winning Blues artist Chris Avey and Jeni Grouws, of the local band Absolute Hoot. There will be complimentary appetizers, a cash bar, and the games Wall of Wine and Heads or Tails. Cost is $20 at the door.
            The noon luncheon, on Saturday, November 5, from 12:00-2:00 p.m., is a great time to enjoy a delicious Fall Salad with friends in the Winneshiek Ballroom, which will be decorated in a charming vintage style. The luncheon is $40 and includes a chance to view the tables before and after the meal. Reservations must be made in advance.

The “Around the World with Iowa Wines” event celebrates the perfect balance between world cuisine and locally made Iowa wines. Each of the eleven Iowa Wine Trail member wineries, including Winneshiek Wildberry Winery and Empty Nest Winery, select a celebrated food region and builds a delicious menu to pair exquisitely with locally crafted wines. My Name is Lucy Barton

Join Decorah Public Library’s Friday Book Group at 2 p.m. Friday Nov. 18 to discuss Elizabeth Strout’s best-selling novel “My Name is Lucy Barton.” The Friday Book Group meets once a month and actively seeks new participants.
 
Growing up in a dysfunctional household, Lucy Barton had a difficult childhood. Her father was abusive and while her mother loved Lucy, she was unable to protect her or her siblings from their father's mercurial mood swings. As a result Lucy would frequently take solace in reading, which led her to realize that she wanted to become a writer. When she came of age, Lucy quickly fled the family home.
