Dog Tales Winter Session

Decorah Public Library staff are continuing to partner with a dedicated group of local volunteers to bring certified therapy dogs to the library several times a month for Dog Tales! During Dog Tales programs, school age children who can read independently may come to the children’s area of the library to read aloud to certified therapy dogs.

The Poetry Slam will be spotlighting Iowa Arts Council fellow Akwi Nji.

Blood Drive at Winneshiek Medical Center

Donating blood is safe, simple and it saves lives. It takes just one hour to make a life-saving blood donation, which will impact the lives of up to three different hospital patients. You can make a difference in your community by helping to maintain the local blood supply when you donate blood with LifeServe Blood Center.



Appointments are recommended, but walk-in donors will be worked into the schedule as time allows. To schedule an appointment, go online to www.lifeservebloodcenter.org or contact Community Relations at Winneshiek Medical Center. 
 
The LifeServe Blood Center requires all donors to provide identification, such as your Blood Center donor card, driver's license, etc. Eligible donors must be at least 16 years of age, in general good health and weigh at least 120 pounds.

Luther Woman's Club Program: "Body of Water"

Every cellular body exists in an ecosystem that is dependent on water, the elixir of life. “Body of Water”—a powerful piece originally performed to sold-out audiences at Luther College in March 2015—intentionally interweaves science and the arts to inform, connect, and inspire human bodies of water to cherish and protect this precious and injured natural resource. 

The Luther College Woman’s Club will feature “Body of Water” co-developers Jane Hawley and Jodi Enos-Berlage at its February meeting on the Luther College campus. All women from Decorah and surrounding communities are invited to attend. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool parking lot is available and leaves at 1:10 p.m. In addition to the informative program, a short business meeting, and refreshments, special music by Luther faculty or students is part of the afternoon’s agenda. 

Hawley and Enos-Berlage will reflect upon their past and current collaborative work on the project, which intermixes dance, music, and video components. In this presentation, the two Luther College faculty members will introduce the biology and dance elements that contributed to the collaboration and share words, images, and movements from “Body of Water.” They will also discuss how the project is streaming forward, including multiple activities currently under way in Decorah and the broader community.

February Energy Breakfast

Manager of the New Hampton's Municipal Electric Utility Brian Quirk will talk about the challenges and opportunities of a municipal electric utility, with a focus on the local economic impacts of keeping energy dollars local. He will discuss the relationship of New Hampton’s light plant and electrical service to other New Hampton utilities and departments and operations, and explore emerging trends and opportunities in the energy world. He will, of course, be open to questions and dialogue, and the breakfast will be informal.

Full of twists and turns, Everything You Want Me to Be reconstructs a year in the life of a dangerously mesmerizing young woman, during which a small town’s darkest secrets come to the forefront…and she inches closer and closer to her death.

Mindy received a BA from the University of Minnesota and an MFA from Hamline University. Apart from brief stops in Iowa City and Galway, she’s lived in the Twin Cities her entire life and held a succession of jobs from an apple orchard laborer to a global credit manager.

Luther College presents the semi-annual "Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert series. This year featuing a weekend-long festival of music from Friday, February 24th-Sunday February 26th. All events throughout the festival are open to the public with no charge for admissioin. The concerts will feature performances of 29 compositions by 26 compsers.

STEAM Lab

Luther and ArtHaus have teamed up for a great weekend. The ArtHaus studio will host the 4-6 STEAM Lab. Instructed by Luther College Art and Education majors, this class will help students explore how to fuse Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math together. This is part of a series of classes for various ages. Later that evening, join SPIN Theater for their production of Annie Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation at Storre Theater on Luther’s campus! 20% of the proceeds will benefit the need-based youth scholarship fund at ArtHaus. Performances will be Thursday, February 23, through Sunday, February 25, but Friday night's proceed percentage benefits ArtHaus.

SAC Spotlight presents G Yamazawa

Luther College's SAC Spotlight presents slam poet George "G" Yamazawa in Marty's in lower level of the Union. Tickets for the event are $5 at the door. Yamazawa is an award winning poet who has performed is spoken word across the United States and Europe and Dubai. He is best known for his evocaitve performance on YouTube.

Free Fly Fishing Workshop

The Iowa Driftless Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Decorah Parks & Recreation, and Winneshiek County Conservation will co-host a free fly fishing workshop  in the Decorah High School gym.  This event is open to anglers of all ages, but requires that children ages 12 and under be accompanied by an adult. Local casting instructors will discuss equipment, demonstrate basic casts, and work with participants on their fly casting skills.  Fly tying demonstrations will also be available.  No registration is required for this event, just show up!  Please enter the high school through the set of double doors near the auditorium.

There will be 400 Pudgy bottles (375mL) at $13 (one per person).

St. Benedict Mardi Gras
