Dinner on the Bluff

Lucie Amundsen joins us from Northern Minnesota to discuss her family's pratfall into chicken farming and the surprising hope they found in the mysterious, little known and poorly named segment of "middle agriculture." Lucie, a writer, marketer and reluctant farmer, co-owns Locally Laid Egg Company with her husband. Locally Laid Egg Company is a farm that provides pasture-raised eggs and partners with a total of seven other mid-level producers. These farms source and sell within their own regions to reduce food miles and strengthen local economies. Lucie uses her Masters in Creative Writing to ghostwrite for a chicken in her recent book Locally Laid, 2016 Midwest Choice Award in Nonfiction.

Nurse-a-Palooza

Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America’s millions of nurses work to save lives and improve the health of their patients. This year all Winneshiek County nursing staff from every organization in the county, are invited to celebrate a special event created just for them – the first Nurse-A-Palooza!

Nurse-A-Palooza will be held at the Danan Lansing building on the Decorah fairgrounds on Wednesday, May 10 beginning at 5:30 p.m. All Winneshiek County nursing staff – past, present and future – are invited to attend the event. There will be free refreshments (donated by area providers), prizes and a short program featuring local nurses – it’s really going to be a fun event.

Earlier this year, area Directors of Nursing formed a work group to create a way to recognize the many nursing staff who provide care in Winneshiek County. The group included Sue Heitman of Winneshiek Medical Center, Krista VandenBrink from Winneshiek County Public Health, Bonnie Sterling from Wellington Place, Brenda Johnson of Aase Haugen Homes, Alison Bishop from Eastern Star and Dawn French from Ossian Senior Hospice. “Our goal is to work together to recognize the tremendous contributions nurses play in our lives,” says Heitman. “So we created an awareness event to encourage all nursing staff to take a pause in 2017 to care for themselves, as they do for so many others.”

In addition to the Nurse-A-Palooza event, staff from each organization are encouraged to take part in a National Nurses Week Drive-to-Provide service project by donating items for people who seek assistance and a safe haven through Helping Services of Northeast Iowa. Needed items will be collected at each organization and the delivery is a planned part of the event on May 10.

WCHFH Home Dedication and Vintage Baseball Game

Join Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH) in Hesper, Iowa, on Saturday, May 13, for two events—the dedication of its 30th home and an entertaining game of vintage baseball.

Home dedication, 1 p.m.:
WCHFH will dedicate its latest housing project—the single-family home that was once the Hesper Friends Church—at 1 p.m. at 1890 Co Rd A14 in Hesper. The former church is now a home for WCHFH’s latest partner family, Holly Dahl and her two daughters, Deanna, a junior at Mabel-Canton High School, and Savannah, a third grader at North Winneshiek Elementary School. Dahl has worked full time at DECO Products in Decorah for more than 18 years.

Vintage baseball game, 1:30 p.m.:
At 1:30 p.m., following the home dedication ceremony, a vintage baseball game pitting the Decorah Driftless Dodgers against WCHFH board members and friends will begin in an adjacent field. (The game will be played according to 1860s baseball rules.) Spectators should bring lawn chairs. WCHFH will provide refreshments. There is no admission, but freewill donations are welcomed.

Founded in 1992, WCHFH has built 30 homes throughout Winneshiek County to date. The organization works in partnership with low-income working families to help them secure decent, affordable housing. WCHFH houses are sold to partner families at no profit and with a 25-year, interest-free mortgage. Each family must make regular mortgage payments and contribute at least 150 hours of “sweat equity” per adult family member to its home and other WCHFH projects.

1. She is not crazy.
2. Her mother was murdered.
3. Someday she is going to find the killer and make him pay.

As certain as Grace is about these facts, nobody else believes her -- so there's no one she can completely trust. Not her grandfather, a powerful ambassador. Not her new friends, who all live on Embassy Row. Not Alexei, the Russian boy next door, who is keeping his eye on Grace for reasons she neither likes nor understands.
Everybody wants Grace to put on a pretty dress and a pretty smile, blocking out all her unpretty thoughts. But they can't control Grace -- no more than Grace can control what she knows or what she needs to do. Her past has come back to hunt her . . . and if she doesn't stop it, Grace isn't the only one who will get hurt. Because on Embassy Row, the countries of the world stand like dominoes, and one wrong move can make them all fall down.
