Book Discussion " News of the World"

The Happy Hour Book Group will meet  to discuss Paulette Jiles’ “News of the World.” A purchase of multiple copies was made possible by the support of Friends of the Library. It is 1870 and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd has been offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.

Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forging a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land. “News of the World” is a work of historical fiction that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.

Book Discussion " Killers of the Flower Moon"

The History Book Group will discuss David Grann’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”  on the 2nd floor of the library. A purchase of multiple copies was made possible by the support of Friends of the Library. In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.

Then the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. As the death toll climbed to more than twenty-four, the FBI took up the case and turned to former Texas Ranger Tom White to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including one of the only American Indian agents in the bureau, and together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

Book Discussion "Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse"

The Friday Book Group will discuss Faith Sullivan’s “Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse.” The meeting will be held  on the 2nd floor of the library.

Nell Stillman’s road is not easy. When her husband dies soon after they move to Harvester, Minnesota, Nell is alone and penniless yet responsible for her baby boy, Hillyard. Nell finds strength in lasting friendships and in the rich inner life awakened by the novels she loves. She falls in love with John Flynn, a charming congressman who becomes a father figure for Hillyard. She teaches at the local school and volunteers at the public library, where she meets Stella Wheeler and her charismatic daughter Sally. She becomes a friend and confidant to many of the girls in town. And no matter how difficult her day, Nell ends each evening with a beloved book. “Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse” celebrates the strength and resourcefulness of independent women, the importance of community, and the transformative power of reading.
