Happy Hour Book Group

Discuss Jesmyn Ward’s “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drug-addicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she's high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie's children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise. “Sing, Unburied, Sing” grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family.

History Book Group

The History Book Group will discuss Charles C. Mann’s “1491". Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus’s landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small, nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last thirty years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong; Charles C. Mann sheds clarifying light on the methods used to arrive at these new visions of the pre-Columbian Americas and how they have affected our understanding of our history and our thinking about the environment.

Rauma Shawl with hood knit along

This project is a beautiful two color shawl with a hood.  This is knit in the round and then steeked to turn it into a shawl.  It is a large project for intermediate to advanced knitters.  We are planning a knit along so you will be able to work at your own pace but have the advantage of working with other knitters on the same project.

Materials needed: pattern, yarn, needles, stitch markers (note: all materials bought at the Blue Heron Knittery for this class are 10% off!)

Class dates: July 15 @ 10 a.m., August 19 @ 1 p.m., September 16 @ 1 p.m., October 7 @ 10 a.m., November 4 @ 10 a.m., December 2 @ 10 a.m., December 30 @ 10 a.m.

NYE with Avey/Grouws Band & The Guilty Kilts!

Let's ring in 2018 with music and laughter! 2017 Iowa Blues Challenge winners, Avey/Grouws Band, are ready to bring in the new year with blues, rock, country, pop and more. And we're excited to announce the opening act, the Guilty Kilts!

Buck Towne and Joe Dodson of the Guilty Kilts make you feel like you're sitting in an Irish pub, and they sometimes get you to sing along! Join them from 8:30 to 10 in the lower bar at the Elks.

Then at 10 the Avey/Grouws Band kicks in! Dance, sing and laugh your way into 2018 with the band as they get set to compete as the Iowa representatives in the 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis just 2 weeks later.

2017 has been an intense year. Let's dance out the old and joyously ring in the new!
