Help Portraits with Photography by Brittany

As part of the international movement, Help Portraits, Photography by Brittany will be offering FREE individual headshots. This will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Everyone who shows up before 5:00 pm will be photographed! Families and couples are welcome to attend together, but will be photographed separately.

Sarah Anderson, a Stella-and-Dot consultant will be on site to provide jewelry for clients to borrow during their portion of the event. Wanting something a little more formal? Stop in at The Hairloom and get your hair styled for FREE by Crystal Anderson or Ali Albertson before heading our way! Tis the season for giving, and this day is all about giving (not taking) photographs.

Nordic Noir Film Nights

Settle in and get unsettled this winter at Nordic Noir Film Nights! Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center, and Luther College's Nordic Studies Program are showing free Scandinavian crime films the second Tuesday of the month from January through April. 

The first film will be the Norwegian version of “Insomnia” (R) on January 9 at 7:00 pm. in the first floor gallery of the museum’s Main Building. 

The film series will continue with “Wallander” (BBC, TV-MA) on February 13, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (American version, R) on March 13, and “Occupied” (Norwegian version, TV-PG) on April 10. Each film will be at 7:00 p.m. and will feature an introduction and discussion led by members of the Nordic Studies Program. Parental guidance is strongly suggested.

Mindfulness for Life

This one day Mindfulness class will help you learn how to achieve one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. We will be exploring the state of being non-judgmental toward ourselves and others as it is happening. Mindfulness is about waking up from a life on automatic, and being sensitive to our everyday experiences.

Rock Climbing

Learn the fundamentals of rock climbing as you work to reach your climbing goals on our 30 foot-high, indoor wall with routes to suite every level of climber. You will also learn how to control the climbing rope (belay) then act as belayers for each other. No prior experience required and all equipment will be provided.

The Fine Art of Oil Painting

You will find this a great opportunity to take your painting to the next level. Working with Joni will allow you to get the personal help you need with your art. Focus on developing your own artistic vision, or getting you past any painter’s block you may be experiencing. The subject focus of this class is life like landscapes. This class is designed for painters of all levels, whether you are new to oil painting or an advanced painter wanting to brush up on your techniques.

Orienteering

Would you like to be able to find your way around the woods using only a map and a compass? Reading a topographic map, understanding contour lines, and utilizing compass skills will be essential skills taught in this class. After plenty of inside practice, you’ll be challenged to navigate your way around the woods of Eagle Bluff to locate control points. No experience is necessary and all supplies will be provided. This is a great opportunity to learn a new skill, get some exercise and have fun!

Clay Hand-Building: Slabs

Hand-building slabs of clay is an exciting way to create shapes that could never be produced using a potter’s wheel or that would be difficult to create with coiling. Instructor and artist Laremy Ellsworth will lead you through the process of slab hand-building and teach you the tricks of the trade. You will be creating a unique hand-built slab pot of your design.

Note: You may take your pot home at the end of class and find a place to fire it for you, or Laremy will take it home to be fired (no additional cost) and then arrange a time for pick up. If you would like your final product glazed, it will be an additional $10 materials fee, payable to instructor at class. Pots take about 1 week to dry, 2 weeks to fire and additional time if glazed.

Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging facilitates a free caregiver support group the 3rd Monday of every month at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home at 10:00 am. These support groups are a free resource for indiciduals caring for an elderly spouse, grandparent, mother, father, relative, or non-relative such as a neighbor. Luther College Woman's Club January meeting

For more than 45 years, Luther College students have had the opportunity to live, learn, and grow through a highly regarded study-abroad program in Nottingham, England. Learn about the rich history of this program from Jim and Karen Martin Schramm—co-directors of the 2016-17 program—during the next meeting of the Luther College Woman’s Club (LCWC).

The couple will present “Encountering Britain: Luther’s Nottingham Program” at the group’s January meeting, to be held Tuesday, January 16, at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union, on the Luther College campus. All women from Decorah and surrounding communities are invited to attend. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool is available and leaves at 1:10 p.m. In addition to the program, a short business meeting, refreshments, and special music by Luther faculty or students are on the afternoon’s agenda.

During the meeting, the Martin-Schramms will provide a brief overview of the program’s history and its key educational components before sharing highlights of their experience with the Luther students who took part in the program during the 2016-17 academic year. The presentation will include insights from educational trips taken over the course of the year as well as the impact of global events such as Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States.

Energy Breakfast

In recent months, a third party contractor has been evaluating the question: Is a municipal electric utility an economically viable option for Decorah?  The preliminary results are in! Join Decorah Power board members as they present the results, discuss next steps, and take questions.

Madrigal Dinner

Decorah High School's 31st Annual Madrigal Diiner. Advanced tickets are $25 each and will be sold at the Decorah High School main office during school hours until nnon Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Clay Hand-Building: Coils

Have you been looking for an introduction to pottery? Than this clay hand-building class is for you! You will be taught how to make clay pots using the coil method. Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic

The event is free and open to the public with no registration required.

The Iowa Legal Aid Taxpayer Clinic is an opportunity to learn more about tax issues, ask questions, and to connect with a staff attorney. Several recent developments in tax law affect the immigration community and these will be covered at the presentation.
 
Please note that this is an opportunity to learn about the tax system and have questions answered- but Iowa Legal Aid does not provide tax preparation services.
