Samite

World-renowned instrumentalist Samite travels the globe bringing his message of peace and hope through the healing power of music. Born and raised in Uganda, Samite was taught to play the traditional flute by his grandfather. When he was 12, a music teacher placed a Western flute in his hands, setting him on his way to becoming one of East Africa’s most acclaimed flutists. Samite performed frequently to enthusiastic audiences throughout Uganda until 1982, when he was forced to flee to Kenya as a political refugee. He immigrated to the United States in 1987. Today Samite’s smooth vocals, accompanied by the kalimba, marimba, litungu and various flutes, mesmerize audiences around the world.

“While performing, I see that people are able to forget their differences and join as one in the moment; my hope is for that moment to last. If we can make that moment last, the world will be a better place.” – Samite

Super Sealant Saturday Offers Free Dental Care for

On Saturday, October 21, 2017, Midwestern University’s College of Dental Medicine-Arizona will host Super Sealant Saturday, a student-organized community service event to benefit local children.

Super Sealant Saturday will take place from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and will be held at the Midwestern University Dental Institute at 5855 West Utopia Road in Glendale. Approximately 200 children ages four to 13 will receive free screenings, cleanings, and molar sealants from dental students under the supervision of licensed dental faculty. Children and their families will also receive important information on proper oral health maintenance and disease prevention. Availability is by appointment only via online registration at www.midwestern.edu/sealant or by calling the Midwestern University Dental Institute at 623/806-7150.

What are tooth sealants? Tooth sealants (dental sealants) are plastic coatings that are bonded into the grooves of teeth to help prevent cavities. The coatings create a smoother, easier-to-clean surface on the tooth and help ward off decay. Sealants can be applied as early as age 6, when molars make their appearance.

Why is Super Sealant Saturday such a great event? Because sealants can typically cost between $35 to $60 per tooth at a regular dental office – which makes the free Super Sealant Saturday event a great deal for kids and parents!

Ideas for Media Coverage
  • On-site live remote of children receiving treatment
  • Student organizer interviews
  • Interviews with children and/or their parents about treatment
  • Interviews with dental students

Facts
  • About 51 million hours of school are lost each year due to dental problems.
  • 31% of Arizona children have never had a dental check-up.
  • Children between the ages of 5 and 17 are five times more likely to have tooth decay than asthma, hay fever, or chronic bronchitis.
  • Almost 50% of children experience tooth decay by age four.
  • For every $10 spent on prevention of oral health problems, an estimated $8-$50 can be saved in restorative and emergency treatment.

The Midwestern University Super Sealant Saturday program is presented by Midwestern University’s American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and is part of a nationwide initiative to provide children with much-needed dental care.
