A gentle walk is for those who want a quiet walk along a relatively flat trail. In the beginning, walks will be a mile or less in length. As the group coalesces, we will try different trails suited to the needs of participants. For the first walk, we will start with a sensory awareness activity, walk less than a half-mile in silence, sit and talk for a few minutes (depending on available seating) or do another quiet activity, and then, walk back. The emphasis will be upon a quiet savoring of what the surroundings have to offer. Speed is not of the essence.

Meanwhile, human beings are facing their greatest challenge - to rectify the horrific problems caused by overpopulation and to find their proper niche in the universe. PEEC's Earth Day talk will be a chautauqua performance by Ann Beyke. Ann will be portraying Rachel Carson, whose work made environmentalism an integral part of our lives. Rachel Carson was a marine biologist when few women dared even tread the water. Her lifelong love of nature and science led to research on how uncontrolled chemical use in our cities, towns and farming communities devastated wildlife and food sources. Silent Spring, her bestselling book on the topic, detailed this devastation and led to the eventual ban on the use of DDT.

Lets do a little something whirly and free form with our mini rugs. This free form class will allow you some creative freedom and really let you get the "hook" of things. YOU will have a hand in the designing, drawing out and producing your own piece of art AND heritage! Though not well known this is an addicting needleart that you will be hooked on.. :) Come give it a try! Yu will just need an embroidery hoop at least 6 inches in diameter, though oval hoops will work well too! This is just to hold your piece taunt while you work. The Earth Day Festival will feature booths and displays where community groups will show their earth-friendly products and practices, and provide information about our environment on the Pajarito Plateau. This year's festival will feature three entertainment groups. Renaissance entertainment group Clan Tynker will perform at 11:00 a.m. New to the festival this year, Wise Fool will perform with giant puppets at 1:00 p.m. The Hill Stompers will perform at noon.

The Los Alamos High School Olions Thespian Club proudly present the musical play, RAGS, a sweeping, inspirational saga about Russian Jewish immigrants arriving at Ellis Island and their struggles to make a life for themselves in the New World. "The story line is great, the music is wonderful, the cast is superb. My view from the pit orchestra is that Rags is the most challenging musical I've seen produced at LAHS. Go see it!" Craig Martin

The Family Council annual Fifties Sock Hop is popular with a full range of age groups - from 9 mos.to 84 yrs old. "Elvis" will be the MC and will award prizes for contests (bubble gum blowing, jitterbug, hula hoops) and door prizes. Fifties-type food and gift shop items will be for sale. Renowned local artist, Secundino Sandoval, has donated a painting to support this fund-raising activity.

LAYL high school students will be putting on WILD day for elementary (k-6) age school children at the highschool gym. Running/walking event with a 3.1 mile competitive run or a 2 mile noncompetitive fun walk. You may participate with or without a dog. This is a fund raiser for the Friends of the Shelter. The money is used for our Spay and Neuter Program and it supports the Catastrophic Medical Assistance Fund. It also aids in the adoption program and medical expenses.
