Economic Resources

Although best known as the site of the Los Angeles County Fair, where more than 1.67 million people visit each year, the newly renovated, 487-acre Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona has quickly become the venue of choice for national and international trade shows and conventions. The addition of the Sheraton Suites Fairplex hotel has helped drive business even further. The city boasts 1,168 hotel rooms and meeting space for1,300 people. There are 19 financial institutions in Pomona, including five banks, five savings and loans, and nine credit unions. Pomona also offers two renowned Medical facilities: the 493-bed Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, with a staff of more than 500 physicians, 2,000 employees and 800 volunteers, and the nationally known Casa Colina Hospital for Rehabilitative Medicine.

With a combined resource of more than 95,000 students at Cal Poly Pomona, DeVry Institute of Technology, Westech College, Western University of Health Sciences and other nearby colleges and universities, Pomona has an array of professional and knowledgeable workers.

Health Care

Pomona Valley Hospital - a 493-bed facility with 500 physicians, 2,000 employees and 800 volunteers, serving Pomona since 1903.

Casa Colina Hospital for Rehabilitative Medicine - a 66-bed hospital specializing in brain and spinal cord injuries, chronic pain and pulmonary disease.


Education

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly) - Home to six academic colleges-Agriculture, Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Environmental Design and Science plus schools for Education, Integrative Studies and a multi-award winning Hotel and Restaurant Management major-and more than 16,000 undergraduate students. With its 1,438 acres, Cal Poly is the second largest of the California State University's 20 campuses.

Western University of Health Sciences (formerly College of the Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific) - has nearly 1,000 students and is located in the heart of downtown Pomona.

DeVry Institute of Technology - one of 13 campuses of the DeVry system of higher education, the Pomona facility offers bachelor of science degrees in six disciplines ranging from accounting to electronics engineering technology and an associate degree program for electronics technicians.

Westech College - offers a variety of vocational training programs including medical records and billing, and Computer-Aided Drafting.

Pomona Unified School District - 25 elementary schools and 11 secondary schools with more than 30,000 students enrolled.

Other educational facilities - The City also has 23 private (K-12) schools. Pomona also is situated within minutes of six other major universities - the five Claremont Colleges and University of La Verne - as well as Mount San Antonio Community College.


Safety

The Pomona Police Department, with 174 sworn officers and 135 civilian personnel, provides services that range from community-oriented policing projects such as neighborhood reclamation and revitalization programs to bicycle/pedestrian safety, substance abuse suppression and education programs, neighborhood substations and helicopter patrols. Overall crime in Pomona has shown a steady decline - more than 17 percent since 1993.

The County of Los Angeles Fire Protection District has provided fire and emergency service to the city since 1994. The service includes more than eight fully staffed fire stations, several specialty units and two paramedic squads. The City participates in the regional concept of service delivery and has immediate access to additional equipment including 14 engines and five paramedic squads.
