Economic Overview

Sierra Vista is the largest of seven incorporated cities in Cochise County.
With a population of 44,736, in 2007, Sierra Vista accounts for nearly one-third of the county's population.
The economy of Sierra Vista is heavily dependent on Fort Huachuca, home of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command. Fort Huachuca was annexed in 1971 and the military and civilian communities enjoy one of the most cordial relationships of its kind in the United States.
Sierra Vista is the retail hub of Cochise County. Large retail chains such as Target, Wal-Mart, Dillard's, Lowes, Best Buy and Home Depot are located in the city.
The restaurant industry in the area has also expanded, with the arrival of Chili's, Outback Steakhouse, El Paso BBQ, Hana Tokyo Japanese Restaurant and Texas Roadhouse.


Race and Ethnicity

According to the U.S. Censu Bureau, Sierra Vista's population in 2000 was 73.3% white, 10.9% black or African American, 0.8% American Indian or Alaska native, 4.1% Asian or Pacific Islander and 10.9% other (two or more races combined).
Approximately 15.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.


Population

The estimated population of Sierra Vista as of July 2007 was 44,736. This represents a 0.3% decrease from 2006, but an 18.4% increase since Census 2000.
Based on its population size, Sierra Vista ranks as the 16th largest incorporated sub-county area of 88 areas statewide.
Sierra Vista's population includes Fort Huachuca, which was annexed to the city in 1971.
In 2005, a total of 6,792 military personnel and their family members resided on post.


Education

Sierra Vista Public Schools consists of one high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools.
During 2006/2007, Buena High School had an enrollment of 2,785 and its Arizona Learns Rating was Performing.
Fort Huachuca Accommodation Schools consists of one middle school and two elementary schools.
Sierra Vista also has five charter schools, with a total enrollment of 942, as of October 2006.
Higher Education is offered through Cochise College, University of Arizona South, University of Phoenix, Wayland Baptist University and Western International University.


Health Care

The Sierra Vista Regional Health Center offers state-of-the-art technology, modern facilities, a newly expanded maternal unit with birthing suites, a Level 2 nursery, intensive care and a newly renovated medical surgical departments, the latest in cardiac catheterization, complete rehabilitation services and a free-standing ambulatory surgery center.
SVRHC maintains an 86-bed acute care facility, with 70 active physicians, 37 courtesy and nine Allied Health professionals on its staff.

The crime rate in Sierra Vista in 2006 - the most recent data available - was 46.3 crimes per 1,000 population. In 2006, Sierra Vista's crime rate was lower than the county and state levels.
