Historic U.S. Highway 40 Association is committed to the public education, enjoyment, historic significance and economic growth of that portion of the original Coast-to-Coast Highway U.S. 40 and its predecessor, the Lincoln Highway from San Francisco to Reno, over the old Donner Pass at 7,239 feet in elevation into Truckee, California. When the old pass was closed because of winter storms, the use of Historic U.S. Highway 40 Alternate (U.S.40 A) which follows the route starting on State Highway 113 in Davis, through Marysville, past Oroville up the Feather River Gorge on current State Highway 70 (a Scenic Byway) and along the Middle Fork of the Feather River (a Wild and Scenic Waterway) through Portola, Sierra Valley, past Vinton and the beginning of Historic Mother Lode Highway, (State Highway 49) over Beckwourth Pass at Chilcoot (5,221 Feet Elevation - the lowest pass through the Sierra Mountain Range), to U.S. Highway 395 at Hallelujah Junction and on into Reno.
