Chef John Panza of BigA has created a special menu you will “treasure” to pair with the movie KincsemKinscem is a rollicking period piece with an attitude.  Based on the true story of a horse who won every race she ever ran, (54 races over a period of four years.) Find out who gets the girl and who gets the horse in this cinematic ride. BigA is known as one of the best dining experiences in Prescott.  If you have not heard of BigA yet, you will!  Each three-course meal comes with a glass of wine and a movie ticket.  Dinner seating is VERY limited so purchase your tickets early.

Arizona Humanities Lecture:Art of the Internment Camps: Culture Behind Barbed Wire

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1942 WWII Executive Order 9066 forced the removal of nearly 125,000 Japanese-American citizens from the West Coast, incarcerating them in ten remote internment camps in seven states. Government photographers Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, and Ansel Adams documented the internment, and artists Toyo Miyatake, Chiura Obata, Henry Sugimoto, and Miné Okubo made powerful records of camp life. Arizona's two camps (Gila River, Poston) were among the largest, and this chronicle illuminates an important episode of state history, one grounded in national agendas driven by prejudice and fear. Betsy Fahlman is Professor of Art History at Arizona State University. Funding provided by the Friends of the Prescott Public Library.

The Merry Wives of Windsor / Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Presents

The Merry Wives of Windsor

This “citizen comedy” is a lively portrait of Elizabethan England in which Shakespeare leaves the realm of royal intrigue and follows the laughable, if not always lovable, Sir John Falstaff off the battlefield and into a romantic fray. Sir John’s would-be lovers band together to give the scheming knight his comeuppance in a hilarious tale that anticipates the screwball comedy of 20th-century film but retains the Bard’s signature wit and sophistication.

You’ll cheer aloud for the cheeky women of Windsor as they band together, and stick up for themselves, to find, reignite, and maintain their romances.

Skirting Traditions Lecture Series
Pauline Bates Brown, Pauline Elizabeth Cooper (called "Polly" by her family) was born March 26, 1901 to John and Elizabeth (Davis) Cooper in an area north of Garber in Oklahoma Territory. Pauline went on to be the first woman Sunday editor at the Arizona Republic in the early 1930s, at a time when other women were losing their jobs. She was press officer for the Japanese American internment camp in Poston, Ariz., and information specialist with the Indian Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior in Phoenix. Pauline was also one of the founding members of the Arizona Press Women.

Brenda Kimsey Warneka, who served as project leader for "Skirting Traditions," is an award-winning writer and editor with a background in law and business. She is president of Arizona Women Press Women and is also co-editor and a contributor to the 2010 award winning anthology "Mystery of Fate: Common Coincidence or Divine Intervention?" Warneka has a background in law and the computer industry, and for a number of years, wrote a column for the Maricopa Lawyer, a Maricopa County Bar publication. She has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School. In addition, she won the 2008 Annual Nonfiction Award by Arizona Attorney magazine for her story "The Traffic Stop."

Skirting Traditions: Arizona Women Writers and Journalists 1912-2012, an anthology, chronicles the lives and accomplishments of 28 Arizona women who exhibited resilience, creativity and the grit to survive, whether on the frontier of a young state or in a male-dominated profession. These are women who in their time, by "skirting traditions," were often controversial. The narratives in "Skirting Traditions" move forward from the beginning of statehood in 1912 to the modern day, describing daring feats, patriotic actions, and amazing accomplishments by women profiled. Please visit the Sharlot Hall Museum store to purchase your own copy of this book for $22.95.

In 2012, the book was designated an Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission. Eighteen award winning members of the Arizona Press Women, sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women Education Fund, each penned a chapter for this project. Proceeds from book sales will fund college scholarships in Arizona.

To celebrate this centennial project Sharlot Hall Museum is pleased to present a series of lectures by each of the authors of Skirting Traditions throughout 2013.

The Prescott Film Festival Presents "Nosferatu"
This Halloween The Prescott Film Festival will be screening "Nosferatu" with live piano accompaniment by Jonathan Best! This classic silent film is based on Bram Stoker's Dracula and is the first film adaptation. One problem though- They didn't get permission from Stoker's estate. They did change some of the key locations and characters names; but in the end, it was still the original story of Dracula.

Prescott Film Festival Presents "Kings of Summer"
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately..." Henry David Thoreau wrote those oft-quoted words. In the new indie film "The Kings of Summer," three adolescent boys bent on escaping the clutches of their parents have decided to leave home and live in the woods in this coming of age film that packs in laughs, discovery, and parent/child relationships.

The boys decide they can't handle their parents and their reality, so they decide to create their own world and build a house in the middle of a woods-surrounded meadow. Of course, they don't tell their parents so the whole town thinks they have all been kidnapped.

City-wide panic and emotions ensue. Join us for this fun and compelling indie film!

This Month in History with Bill Weiss

Historian Bill Weiss will discuss two important anniversaries:  June 17, 1972: On this date, Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington's Watergate Complex was burglarized by members of the White House ""Plumbers"" unit—secret operatives, including ex-CIA members, whose job was to stop leaks of classified information and to gather intelligence on President Nixon's ""enemies.""  June 24, 1948:  On this date, East German authorities, backed by Soviet troops, cut off road and rail access to West Berlin, as well as electrical power, hoping to force American, British and French occupation forces to leave the city.  In response, President Harry Truman organized the famous Berlin Airlift, which daily flew tons of food, fuel and clothing to desperate West Berliners, forcing the Communists to lift the blockade 11 months later.

United Way Day of Action: Volunteers Needed
Day of Action (June 21) is a day when volunteers from across Yavapai County join local nonprofits to participate in service projects. United Way encourages volunteers of all ages to come together and take action.

Projects can be from organizing a small space to building a garden. United Way ensures that projects are meaningful to volunteers and build capacity for our Partner Agencies. Whatever the project may be, volunteers are able to help nonprofits better serve their clients through this great opportunity.

United Way of Yavapai County's goal is to make this year's Day of Action the biggest yet. With 19 Partner Agencies in the Quad-city, Verde Valley, and Bagdad area, we are looking to host at least one project at each site. But to make that possible, we need you.

Bring your families, friends and coworkers for a day of giving, fun, and love. Volunteer an hour or a full day and see the difference we can make with a hand or two. Join the efforts at yavapaiuw.org/day-of-action.

Can't give your time but still want to give back? Contact Jacky at 928-778-6605 if you are interested in getting involved.
