Wet and Wild: Paint Vibrant Water Scenes in Brilliant Color with Judy Gilbert Pollard

pollard_120318.jpg

WATERCOLOR AND OTHER WATER-MEDIA

For Beginners WITH SOME EXPERIENCE to Advanced Levels

(Watercolor, Oil and Acrylic)

With a stunning waterfall or intimate woodsy creek – with wildflowers blooming on the bank – as your subject, learn to make water look wet, reflective and splashy! Painting water that looks wet requires some basic knowledge of the dynamics of cascading water. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this stunning, fascinating and challenging subject! Studio lessons will focus on:

  • The “anatomy of a waterfall”

  • Incorporating flowers into a “waterscape”

  • Negative painting lessons

  • Creative color

There will be demos, instruction at all levels, critique and lots of painting time. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!

Author of three North Light books, Watercolor Unleashed (2013), Discover Oil Painting (2016) and Brilliant Color (oil & acrylic – 2009), plus three Watercolor Unleashed videos, two Acrylic Unleashed videos and four Oil Painting Unleashed videos for ArtistsNetwork.com, Julie has taught watercolor and oil classes for over 30 years.

Painting the Rocky Landscape with Judy Gilbert Pollard

pollard_rocky.jpg

WATERCOLOR, Oil and acrylic

For Beginners WITH SOME EXPERIENCE to Advanced Levels

ROCKS, BOULDERS & PEBBLES: the “bedrock” of landscape painting. Creating the shapes and depth of individual rocks and learning to combine many rocks and pebbles into a single collective shape that says “rocks” without detailing each one is crucial to successful landscape painting. This workshop will focus on the challenge of painting a landscape in which rocks, boulders and pebbles are a significant feature. A photo will be provided for student use but they are always welcome and encouraged to paint from their own reference material. There will be demonstrations of techniques suitable for the subject, exercises, ongoing critique and lots of painting time. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within every attendee. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting! http://www.juliegilbertpollard.com

Luminous Architectural Paintings in Watercolor and Acrylic with Betty Carr, AISM, APAP, KA

Untitled-1.jpg

For Beginners with Some Experience to Advanced Levels

So often, painters will see a gorgeous scene such as looking down into a village town, (Jerome, Az. comes to mind), or upwards to a picturesque church on a hill and wish they felt confident enough to paint the scene.) Creating a luminous, inviting environment in and around architectural elements when painting is both exciting and challenging. Capturing these compositions as well as luminosity is where the focus will be in this workshop.

Over the three days, you will learn to:

  • Create a value sketch to help you plan for the absolute finest masterpiece in watercolor and/or acrylic (and learn to love value sketches)

  • Use design and compositional elements to create paths of light and shadow.

  • Create both linear and atmospheric perspective to add depth in a painting.

  • Use painterly, impressionistic brushwork and garden elements which help to loosen up some of the more static building environments.

Betty will provide architectural, garden and landscape photos but if you have some favorites, bring them as well.

Sherman (the Sherman Brothers) and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, and a script by Julian Fellowes. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Walt Disney Theatrical and directed by Richard Eyre with co-direction from Matthew Bourne who also acted as co-choreographer with Stephen Mear, the original West End production opened in December 2004 and won two Olivier Awards, one for Best Actress in a Musical and the other for Best Theatre Choreography. A Broadway production with a near-identical creative team opened in November 2006, with only minor changes from the West End version. Emphasizing Abstraction with Stuart Shils
Day 1 and 2 we will be focusing on interpreting visual history, examining forms of abstraction in painting and drawing by way of our own responses graphically. Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, as the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints. Day 3 – REFRAMING THE ORDINARY: DRAWING ON THE STREETS WITH A CRITICAL VISUAL EYE This one day class will introduce and cultivate the perceptual tools of rapid visual summation and notation, both in terms of how to understand what you see and how to remake that into clear and intelligent graphic formats on paper. Working in very ordinary places in downtown Sedona we will focus on noticing how everyday architectural space is really extraordinary visually and then, with how to translate that awareness into drawing. Opportunities for dinner gatherings and ongoing discussion and critique are arranged on an ongoing basis giving this workshop a broad scope and richness.

Film: The Restoration of Fossil Creek

Fossil Creek was designated as a Wild and Scenic River in March, 2009. Now one of the best native fish streams in Arizona, restoration occurred after Arizona Public Service deactivated the Childs hydroelectric power plant, removed the flume and equipment, and restored the full flow of Fossil Springs into the creek bed which had been dry for a hundred years. After the flow was restored, Arizona Game and Fish constructed a fish barrier near the confluence of Fossil Creek and the Verde River, removed all the non-native fish, and stocked 9 species of rare native fish. The film describes how Fossil Creek has been restored to glory. The producer of the film, NAU Professor Stefan Sommer, will present the film and answer questions.

This event is free to the public. No RSVP needed. For info contact yavapaisierra@gmail.com

Building An Intentional Culture Workshop

We are surrounded by buzz words for work environments of the new millennium.  Culture, healthy organizations, purpose and meaning, mindfulness, and so on and so on.  But what does it all really mean?  Building an intentional culture means putting your best foot forward, having a shared mindset, and executing through leadership starting with a set of beliefs that transcend the organization.  In the time we spend together, we will discuss how the four elements of culture can help your organization for the better.

2019 NHI Speaker Series - Scallywags, Gloryhounds, Visionaries and Conservationists: Stories from the Arader Collection
Melanie Campbell-Carter will share little-known vignettes about the fascinating people behind the Josephine Michell Arader Natural History Print Collection images on display in the Natural History Institute Art Gallery.

Her talk explores the histories of several larger-than-life personalities represented in the Natural History Institute’s current art exhibit. “I kept finding plenty of scallywags,” Melanie reports, “and had to dig really deep to find conservationists!”

“One was a draft-dodger; one’s spouse was guillotined; quite a few were rebels; and it’s fair to say most of them were very, very stubborn. The more I learned about these people, the more I wanted to know! I am delighted to share a few stories and appreciate the art in a deeper context.”

Melanie Campbell-Carter is a retired family physician from Texas, who accidentally discovered late in life, that she had a knack for drawing.  In order to pursue that passion, she moved to southern California to study drawing.

Since then, her art has been exhibited at many shows, including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and St Petersburg, Russia; and her botanical art resides in permanent collections at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Kauai, Hawaii, and at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, Brody Educational Center in San Marino, CA.

"From the Rhine to the Rhone" An Art-Full Afternoon in the Garden

Please join us for AAUW’s third annual Art-Full Afternoon in the Garden

AAA School Safety Patrol Program
The AAA School Safety Patrol Program guides and directs students, their families and schools to address road safety with the goal of reducing injuries and preventing deaths among 5-12 year olds.

School zone traffic causes concern for parents, their children, schools and the community. It is important for kids to learn proper pedestrian practices at a young age.

Safety Patrollers are students volunteers trained to direct pedestrians at school crossings, carpool areas and bus zones- they direct children, not traffic. Patrollers learn and practice road safety, leveraging this training to lead the way in keeping their fellow classmates and communities safer.

The Merry Wives of Windsor / Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Presents

The Merry Wives of Windsor

This “citizen comedy” is a lively portrait of Elizabethan England in which Shakespeare leaves the realm of royal intrigue and follows the laughable, if not always lovable, Sir John Falstaff off the battlefield and into a romantic fray. Sir John’s would-be lovers band together to give the scheming knight his comeuppance in a hilarious tale that anticipates the screwball comedy of 20th-century film but retains the Bard’s signature wit and sophistication.

You’ll cheer aloud for the cheeky women of Windsor as they band together, and stick up for themselves, to find, reignite, and maintain their romances.

Skirting Traditions Lecture Series
Pauline Bates Brown, Pauline Elizabeth Cooper (called "Polly" by her family) was born March 26, 1901 to John and Elizabeth (Davis) Cooper in an area north of Garber in Oklahoma Territory. Pauline went on to be the first woman Sunday editor at the Arizona Republic in the early 1930s, at a time when other women were losing their jobs. She was press officer for the Japanese American internment camp in Poston, Ariz., and information specialist with the Indian Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior in Phoenix. Pauline was also one of the founding members of the Arizona Press Women.

Brenda Kimsey Warneka, who served as project leader for "Skirting Traditions," is an award-winning writer and editor with a background in law and business. She is president of Arizona Women Press Women and is also co-editor and a contributor to the 2010 award winning anthology "Mystery of Fate: Common Coincidence or Divine Intervention?" Warneka has a background in law and the computer industry, and for a number of years, wrote a column for the Maricopa Lawyer, a Maricopa County Bar publication. She has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School. In addition, she won the 2008 Annual Nonfiction Award by Arizona Attorney magazine for her story "The Traffic Stop."

Skirting Traditions: Arizona Women Writers and Journalists 1912-2012, an anthology, chronicles the lives and accomplishments of 28 Arizona women who exhibited resilience, creativity and the grit to survive, whether on the frontier of a young state or in a male-dominated profession. These are women who in their time, by "skirting traditions," were often controversial. The narratives in "Skirting Traditions" move forward from the beginning of statehood in 1912 to the modern day, describing daring feats, patriotic actions, and amazing accomplishments by women profiled. Please visit the Sharlot Hall Museum store to purchase your own copy of this book for $22.95.

In 2012, the book was designated an Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission. Eighteen award winning members of the Arizona Press Women, sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women Education Fund, each penned a chapter for this project. Proceeds from book sales will fund college scholarships in Arizona.

To celebrate this centennial project Sharlot Hall Museum is pleased to present a series of lectures by each of the authors of Skirting Traditions throughout 2013.

The Prescott Film Festival Presents "Nosferatu"
This Halloween The Prescott Film Festival will be screening "Nosferatu" with live piano accompaniment by Jonathan Best! This classic silent film is based on Bram Stoker's Dracula and is the first film adaptation. One problem though- They didn't get permission from Stoker's estate. They did change some of the key locations and characters names; but in the end, it was still the original story of Dracula.

Prescott Film Festival Presents "Kings of Summer"
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately..." Henry David Thoreau wrote those oft-quoted words. In the new indie film "The Kings of Summer," three adolescent boys bent on escaping the clutches of their parents have decided to leave home and live in the woods in this coming of age film that packs in laughs, discovery, and parent/child relationships.

The boys decide they can't handle their parents and their reality, so they decide to create their own world and build a house in the middle of a woods-surrounded meadow. Of course, they don't tell their parents so the whole town thinks they have all been kidnapped.

City-wide panic and emotions ensue. Join us for this fun and compelling indie film!
