Blue Christmas: A Service of Darkness and Light
This time of the year we experience the longest nights and the shortest days, and the winter solstice is the darkest night of the year. Yet, we know from these days of darkness we move forward into the light.  This liturgy is another step to help us continue to move into the light out of our darkness.

This is a solemn service created for those who are experiencing loss or grief this time of year. There will be various opportunities in the service for you to participate: to sing, pray, light a candle, or just to sit quietly.

6th Annual Winterfest in Sedona
From January 10-13, 2019, Chamber Music Sedona will present its Sixth Annual Winterfest. This popular yearly celebration will entertain and educate attendees with a dynamic schedule of events, including an intimate salon musicale held in one of Sedona’s private homes and a culminating chamber music concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 13 at the Sedona Performing Arts Center. In addition, as part of Chamber Music Sedona’s commitment to introducing young people to world-class chamber music, the festival will include incredible vocal, clarinet and piano performances at local schools. As the grand finale of the Winterfest, the January 13 concert will showcase acclaimed artists Sarah Shafer (soprano), Roman Rabinovich (piano) and Alexander Fiterstein (clarinet) as they perform a diverse selection of works by famed composers. Notably, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy Schubert’s “Shepherd on the Rock” amidst the setting of Sedona’s breathtaking Red Rocks. As his second to last of more than 600 lieder, Schubert composed “Shepherd on the Rock” just one month before his death in 1828. At approximately 12 minutes in length, the piece is longer than most of his other songs and traces an emotional voyage from romantic longing to profound loneliness and, finally, to hopeful anticipation. Other highlights of the concert will include “Three Folk Songs, op. 19” by English composer John McCabe, George Gershwin’s sultry “Summertime,” three masterpieces by Leonard Bernstein, “Bill” from Jerome Kern’s Show Boat, and “Chants D’Auvergne, Series 3,” a folk song by French composer Joseph Canteloube. At the winter salon musicale, held on Thursday, January 10 at 5:30 p.m., Mr. Rabinovich will dazzle a smaller audience with a recital of masterpieces for the solo piano, including works by Bach, Schubert and György Ligeti. Hosted in one of Sedona’s beautiful private homes, the salon will offer a unique opportunity for attendees to interact with the artist and enjoy world-class chamber music in an intimate setting. Light hors d’oeuvre and local wine will be served.

A Christmas Story
Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, at Higbee's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out!" All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial.

Arizona Humanities Lecture: Arizona Stories: Frontier Characters and Communities
From mammoth hunters and canal builders to Native Americans, Hispanics, Americans, Irish, Serbians, and just about every nationality under the sun, Arizona has always been a land of many cultures. And while the Earps and the Geronimo are world famous, Arizona can also be proud of its unsung men and women and cooperative communities. Here we will share Arizona's experiences from the famous to the little known, from Native American ceremonies to mining booms, cattle drives, cotton harvests, and religious settlements, we will learn how Arizona evolved from a violent frontier to a just and civil society dedicated to its people's welfare.

The Toughest Monster Truck Tour

ABOUT THE EVENT

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! The Toughest Monster Truck Tour is coming to the Prescott Valley Event Center!  Forget about any other monster truck event you have ever seen because this one is different and here is why: If you ask any monster truck driver who has competed in the Toughest Monster Truck Tour, they will tell you that indeed, the TMTT has the most difficult tracks of all the tours, which is why it is called the Toughest Monster Truck Tour. Because of the high level of difficulty, only the best monster trucks and drivers are invited to participate.

The 6-truck line-up will include 2018 Tour Champion Larry Swim in Bigfoot, 2018 Runner-Up (by just 10 points), Aaron Cain in the world’s largest ATV, Quad Chaos and the monster-sized Dump Truck, Dirt Crew, plus three more, to be announced. But don’t worry, the other three will also be fierce competitors. The full line-up will be announced on October 1st. In addition to the monster truck action, the transforming fire-breathing, car-eating dinosaur robot, Megasaurus will be featured!

For more information on monster trucks visit:  www.toughestmonstertrucks.com

For more info on this event go to the PVEC website.

The show will commence at the top of each hour from 6-9pm, giving viewers a unique opportunity to celebrate Sedona’s natural beauty, art scene, awe-inspiring landscapes, and dark night skies. For Sedona Northern Lights, holiday-themed 3D art will be projected onto Camelhead Rock, located next to Sedona’s famous Snoopy Rock. The surface of Camelhead Rock is an astounding 182,000,000 square feet and contains numerous different angles and curves—meaning that the show requires an impressively complex set-up. For example, the projection tower will be situated 3,000 feet away, and 12 projectors will be synchronized to generate a seamless image. Despite its grandeur, Sedona Northern Lights will not leave any harmful impacts on Sedona’s natural environment and is, in fact, intended to raise awareness of the need to protect the area’s dark skies. The event’s sponsors are committed to sustainability and maintaining the natural beauty of Sedona, “Earth’s Greatest Treasure.” To enhance the sense of holiday magic, music to accompany the 3D light show will be played at certain viewing areas and may also be heard by tuning into KAZM 780AM.

Whiskey Row New Year's Eve Boot Drop

8th Annual New Year’s Event Kicks Off 2019

6-foot Illuminated Boot to be dropped from flagpole in downtown Prescott, Arizona

On Monday, December 31, 2018 Historic Whiskey Row in downtown Prescott will be the site for the 8th Annual Boot Drop. A 6-foot illuminated cowboy boot will be slowly lowered down The Palace Building’s 40-foot flagpole to ring in the New Year. Two drops will happen: one at 10pm and the second at midnight both with fireworks. Event vendors, Ferris wheel, entertainment and giveaways will happen all night from 8pm to 12:30am.

Last year’s event drew thousands of people. Much like the custom in New York’s Times Square, where a large ball has dropped annually since 1907, the Boot Drop event is a growing tradition that will continue year after year.

For further information, contact Matt Brassard with M & M Entertainment at (928) 848-4182.

Why Black and White Photography
Black and white photographer Cole Thompson will make his case for black and white, contending that it is good for any type of image or genre of photography. He will discuss finding your own vision, following your passion, forgetting about what others are doing and creating images that you love. Three prints will be given away at the end of the presentation.Cole was born into a world of black and white images. At the age of fourteen he purchased a Sears photo developing kit. He can still remember the magic as that first black and white image appeared in the developer. He was immediately liberated, no longer consigned to just look, he could now create. Cole works exclusively in black and white and says; ""For me color records the image, but black and white captures the feelings that lie beneath the surface.""

Intuitive Painting with Jesse Reno
In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. You will learn painting and mark-making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to your work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes. Within the process, we will create narrative dialogue by noting what we see and feel in our work. Through the practice of subtractive painting we will remove the parts that are no longer relevant or keep us trapped from progress. This teaches us choice and freedom to change direction in our work. We continually build layers within our paintings combining fragments of past ideas with the new until we arrive at a feeling of completion. Through this engagement we learn to experiment, take risks, re-associate our work from perspectives unconfined by our expectations. This allows us to see things clearly and move to a more expressed and personal engagement when painting.

Emphasizing Abstraction with Stuart Shils
Day 1 and 2 we will be focusing on interpreting visual history, examining forms of abstraction in painting and drawing by way of our own responses graphically. Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, as the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints. Day 3 – REFRAMING THE ORDINARY: DRAWING ON THE STREETS WITH A CRITICAL VISUAL EYE This one day class will introduce and cultivate the perceptual tools of rapid visual summation and notation, both in terms of how to understand what you see and how to remake that into clear and intelligent graphic formats on paper. Working in very ordinary places in downtown Sedona we will focus on noticing how everyday architectural space is really extraordinary visually and then, with how to translate that awareness into drawing. Opportunities for dinner gatherings and ongoing discussion and critique are arranged on an ongoing basis giving this workshop a broad scope and richness.

The Merry Wives of Windsor / Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Presents

The Merry Wives of Windsor

This “citizen comedy” is a lively portrait of Elizabethan England in which Shakespeare leaves the realm of royal intrigue and follows the laughable, if not always lovable, Sir John Falstaff off the battlefield and into a romantic fray. Sir John’s would-be lovers band together to give the scheming knight his comeuppance in a hilarious tale that anticipates the screwball comedy of 20th-century film but retains the Bard’s signature wit and sophistication.

You’ll cheer aloud for the cheeky women of Windsor as they band together, and stick up for themselves, to find, reignite, and maintain their romances.

Prescott Ghost Talk 2014
Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of Prescott Ghost Talk 2014!  This year the annual Prescott Ghost Talk performances will be held on two nights: Friday, October 24th and Saturday, Oct. 25.  Given our sold out performances each year, we are adding one more show at 9:00 pm on Saturday. These five shows (Friday and Saturday at 6:00pm, 7:30pm and Saturday at 9:00pm will offer nearly 1,000 guests to enjoy Ghost Talk!

Experience Arizona's past when famous and infamous "spirits" enact historic ghostly folklore at Prescott Center for the Arts (PCA), 208 N. Marina St., Prescott. This is a collaborative fundraiser between the West Yavapai Guidance Clinic (WYGC) Foundation and PCA - two well-known local nonprofits with two very distinct missions coming together as one to benefit children! You can help make a difference for these organizations with a tax-deductible contribution.  Tickets are available online from the Prescott Center of the Arts or by visiting their box office.

These dramatic performances are designed for adults and not recommended for youngsters 7 and under. After all, it can get pretty spooky!

Skirting Traditions Lecture Series
Pauline Bates Brown, Pauline Elizabeth Cooper (called "Polly" by her family) was born March 26, 1901 to John and Elizabeth (Davis) Cooper in an area north of Garber in Oklahoma Territory. Pauline went on to be the first woman Sunday editor at the Arizona Republic in the early 1930s, at a time when other women were losing their jobs. She was press officer for the Japanese American internment camp in Poston, Ariz., and information specialist with the Indian Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior in Phoenix. Pauline was also one of the founding members of the Arizona Press Women.

Brenda Kimsey Warneka, who served as project leader for "Skirting Traditions," is an award-winning writer and editor with a background in law and business. She is president of Arizona Women Press Women and is also co-editor and a contributor to the 2010 award winning anthology "Mystery of Fate: Common Coincidence or Divine Intervention?" Warneka has a background in law and the computer industry, and for a number of years, wrote a column for the Maricopa Lawyer, a Maricopa County Bar publication. She has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School. In addition, she won the 2008 Annual Nonfiction Award by Arizona Attorney magazine for her story "The Traffic Stop."

Skirting Traditions: Arizona Women Writers and Journalists 1912-2012, an anthology, chronicles the lives and accomplishments of 28 Arizona women who exhibited resilience, creativity and the grit to survive, whether on the frontier of a young state or in a male-dominated profession. These are women who in their time, by "skirting traditions," were often controversial. The narratives in "Skirting Traditions" move forward from the beginning of statehood in 1912 to the modern day, describing daring feats, patriotic actions, and amazing accomplishments by women profiled. Please visit the Sharlot Hall Museum store to purchase your own copy of this book for $22.95.

In 2012, the book was designated an Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission. Eighteen award winning members of the Arizona Press Women, sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women Education Fund, each penned a chapter for this project. Proceeds from book sales will fund college scholarships in Arizona.

To celebrate this centennial project Sharlot Hall Museum is pleased to present a series of lectures by each of the authors of Skirting Traditions throughout 2013.

The Prescott Film Festival Presents "Nosferatu"
This Halloween The Prescott Film Festival will be screening "Nosferatu" with live piano accompaniment by Jonathan Best! This classic silent film is based on Bram Stoker's Dracula and is the first film adaptation. One problem though- They didn't get permission from Stoker's estate. They did change some of the key locations and characters names; but in the end, it was still the original story of Dracula.

Prescott Film Festival Presents "Kings of Summer"
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately..." Henry David Thoreau wrote those oft-quoted words. In the new indie film "The Kings of Summer," three adolescent boys bent on escaping the clutches of their parents have decided to leave home and live in the woods in this coming of age film that packs in laughs, discovery, and parent/child relationships.

The boys decide they can't handle their parents and their reality, so they decide to create their own world and build a house in the middle of a woods-surrounded meadow. Of course, they don't tell their parents so the whole town thinks they have all been kidnapped.

City-wide panic and emotions ensue. Join us for this fun and compelling indie film!
