Newbery Book Club
This is the story of how, one by one, a man found himself a family. Almost nowhere in fiction is there a stranger, dearer, or funnier family -- and the life that the members of The Animal Family live together, there in the wilderness beside the sea, is as extraordinary and as enchanting as the family itself. For kids, grades 5-6. Registrants will be given a personal copy of the book, thanks to the Friends of Prescott Public Library. Register online, at the Youth Desk or call 928.777.1537.  Please note: So that many children have the opportunity to participate in a library book club, children may only register for one book club.  Children in grades 5-6 may sign up for the Graphic Novel Superheroes Club OR the Newbery Book Club, but not both.  Thank you for understanding.

Motown Magic

MOTOWN MAGIC is a solid-gold production that guarantees to have everyone out of their seats and dancing in the aisles!

It’s pretty universally known that Motown is an American record company founded by Berry Gordy in 1959 in Detroit – one that went on to achieve spectacular success for a small record company: 79 records in the Top Ten between 1960 and 1969.

This show jives through the decades of Motown chart topping hit artists and groups like: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson, Tami Terrell, The Marvelettes, Gladys Knight and many many more.

There’s little doubt the memories will help re-create the “sunshine of your life” and “have a hold one you” before the night is out. Even if your “papa WAS a rolling stone,” there’s not a single reason to “shop around” – ’cause this show is one you DON’T want to miss!

Waste Not, Want Not! How Prescott Can Recover Food
Tons of food in our area is wasted every year - food that could be used to support groups that are feeding the hungry. Learn about food recovery through the film Just Eat It and then hear from organizations in the Prescott area that are working to use edible food that would otherwise end up in a landfill to feed hungry people. Shea Richland of the Quad City Food Recovery Program and Bob Painter of the Food Neighbors Project will introduce the work of their organizations, followed by the film and a question and answer session. Popcorn will be served and all attendees are encouraged to contribute to the event's food drive by bringing a shelf stable food item. Donations will go to the Prescott Community Cupboard. Prescott POPS Symphony "Cartoon Tunes" Concert
All of us started out in early childhood experiencing the marvel of Saturday morning’s best entertainment. Cartoons were vessels of laughter, joy, action, and adventure delivered through a fun package of colorful animated characters and wrapped in some of our most memorable music. Many famous cartoons dating back to the 1930’s brought their characters to life to the tune of classical music like Brahm’s Hungarian Dances (WB Looney Tunes “Pigs in a Polka” c. 1943), Bugs Bunny’s memorable performance of Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture in “The Rabbit of Seville” (WB Looney Tunes c. 1946) and Elmer Fudd’s astonishing 1957 performance in WB’s “Kill The Wabbit” (Wagner’s Flight of the Valkeries).

Maestro Joseph Place and the Prescott POPS Symphony will perform a marvelous program of toon tunes from the past that will make you smile…and the specifics are to be a surprise! So get your tickets and pretend you’re going to Corny-Gie Hall with Porky Pig and Bugs for the Corny Concerto…That’s All Folks!

Public Talk: Fearless Life – Letting Go of Anxiety

Public Talk with International Kadampa Teacher Gen-la Kelsang Jampa

Is it possible to be free from fear and anxiety while living in such an uncertain and even dangerous world? Yes, it is. Through controlling the mind and learning to respond skillfully to life’s challenges, we can free ourselves from crippling fears and other painful emotions. We can gain the ability to approach normally anxiety-inducing situations with the confidence of a peaceful mind and a good heart.
Then we will know through our own experience how this mental freedom gives us great meaning and enjoyment in our life.

Gen-la Jampa is an internationally renowned Buddhist ordained teacher and the Deputy Spiritual Director of the New Kadampa Tradition - International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU). As a senior teacher of the NKT, Gen-la Jampa has taught internationally for many years. "Feeling the Effects" Photography Exhibit at 'Tis
The Mezzanine Gallery:  “Feeling the Effects: Photo Impressionism Explored” by Susan Walshe February 15-March 13, 2017.  Please join Susan during the 4th Friday Art Walk reception on February 23rd 5:00-7:00PM

A few words from the artist:

Nineteenth century French artists first gave us Impressionism.   Salons early rejected the visible brush strokes and enhanced color, but this was short-lived.  A new art form was born.  America and the world were next.  And “feeling” rivaled realism for the first time.

Today, photographers have a large tool box.  Editing software can create effects not dreamt of before.  The same principals of original impressionism apply, but with farther-reaching applications.

I saw a natural segue between the old effects and new.  Some simple.  Some complex.  All worthy of notice.  But simple speaks to me.  I also find desktop editing preferable to in-camera editing.  My favorite effects are solarize and oilify, and the occasional visible pixels.  Adding or taking away light and altering color perception always brings surprises.

Photo Impressionism has captured my heart.  And Prescott is the premier location for my whimsical work.  The ordinary and over-looked catch my eye.  I hope that through my photos, you too will “see more”.

Geology Talks: Petrified Forest National Park
Paleontologist Adam Marsh will present on the fossil-rich Kayenta Formation which includes the earliest sauropodomorph, ornithischian and large-bodied theropod dinosaurs in North America, as well as the some of the earliest modern turtles and crocodyliforms in the world. Unfortunately, in the absence of pollen, ash layers and marine index fossils, the age of the Kayenta Formation has only been hypothesized as Early Jurassic using vertebrate biostratigraphy. Marsh will discuss the first U-Pb detrital zircon dates from the unit in order to put into context the early evolution of theses major vertebrate groups in North America.  Geology Talks is hosted by the Central Arizona Geology Club and presented with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library. This event includes an opportunity to ""show and tell"" and ask questions of Geology Club members.

The Merry Wives of Windsor / Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival

Presents

The Merry Wives of Windsor

This “citizen comedy” is a lively portrait of Elizabethan England in which Shakespeare leaves the realm of royal intrigue and follows the laughable, if not always lovable, Sir John Falstaff off the battlefield and into a romantic fray. Sir John’s would-be lovers band together to give the scheming knight his comeuppance in a hilarious tale that anticipates the screwball comedy of 20th-century film but retains the Bard’s signature wit and sophistication.

You’ll cheer aloud for the cheeky women of Windsor as they band together, and stick up for themselves, to find, reignite, and maintain their romances.

Skirting Traditions Lecture Series
Pauline Bates Brown, Pauline Elizabeth Cooper (called "Polly" by her family) was born March 26, 1901 to John and Elizabeth (Davis) Cooper in an area north of Garber in Oklahoma Territory. Pauline went on to be the first woman Sunday editor at the Arizona Republic in the early 1930s, at a time when other women were losing their jobs. She was press officer for the Japanese American internment camp in Poston, Ariz., and information specialist with the Indian Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior in Phoenix. Pauline was also one of the founding members of the Arizona Press Women.

Brenda Kimsey Warneka, who served as project leader for "Skirting Traditions," is an award-winning writer and editor with a background in law and business. She is president of Arizona Women Press Women and is also co-editor and a contributor to the 2010 award winning anthology "Mystery of Fate: Common Coincidence or Divine Intervention?" Warneka has a background in law and the computer industry, and for a number of years, wrote a column for the Maricopa Lawyer, a Maricopa County Bar publication. She has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School. In addition, she won the 2008 Annual Nonfiction Award by Arizona Attorney magazine for her story "The Traffic Stop."

Skirting Traditions: Arizona Women Writers and Journalists 1912-2012, an anthology, chronicles the lives and accomplishments of 28 Arizona women who exhibited resilience, creativity and the grit to survive, whether on the frontier of a young state or in a male-dominated profession. These are women who in their time, by "skirting traditions," were often controversial. The narratives in "Skirting Traditions" move forward from the beginning of statehood in 1912 to the modern day, describing daring feats, patriotic actions, and amazing accomplishments by women profiled. Please visit the Sharlot Hall Museum store to purchase your own copy of this book for $22.95.

In 2012, the book was designated an Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission. Eighteen award winning members of the Arizona Press Women, sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women Education Fund, each penned a chapter for this project. Proceeds from book sales will fund college scholarships in Arizona.

To celebrate this centennial project Sharlot Hall Museum is pleased to present a series of lectures by each of the authors of Skirting Traditions throughout 2013.

Prescott Film Festival Presents "Kings of Summer"
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately..." Henry David Thoreau wrote those oft-quoted words. In the new indie film "The Kings of Summer," three adolescent boys bent on escaping the clutches of their parents have decided to leave home and live in the woods in this coming of age film that packs in laughs, discovery, and parent/child relationships.

The boys decide they can't handle their parents and their reality, so they decide to create their own world and build a house in the middle of a woods-surrounded meadow. Of course, they don't tell their parents so the whole town thinks they have all been kidnapped.

City-wide panic and emotions ensue. Join us for this fun and compelling indie film!
