(04/15/18)Mesquite Reads wins big at MLN mystery dinner theatre (07/28/16)“I am overwhelmed from the community’s generosity and support of the Mesquite Reads program for the local elementary school kids,” Mesquite Local News Editor Barbara Ellestad said after $2,650 was raised for the program at a mystery dinner theatre staged by the MLN staff Thursday, July 28.
“We very much appreciate the Eureka Casino Resort and Eureka Community Initiative partnering with us to help raise money for the kids,” Ellestad said. “And no event would be complete without the Mesquite Show Girls on hand to help out.”
” I just cannot thank you and your incredible team for the special event,” said Andre Carrier, Eureka Casino Resort CEO. “It was a remarkable amount of work and it was truly fantastically executed and great fun. It was a wonderful gesture on behalf of Mesquite Reads and greatly added to the legacy of innovation and commitment that is a hallmark of this community effort. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Directed and produced by Teri Nehrenz, MLN Office Manager and community outreach liaison, the dinner theatre was held at the Eureka Casino Resort and attended by 96 people who laughed from beginning to end.
“Alabama Jones and the Trailer Park of DOOM!” is a spoof of Indiana Jones movies with a southern twist – and a twister.

The Goodwill donation truck set up at the Walmart parking lot at 10 a.m. and donations slowly began rolling in. Several cars stopped when they saw the lovely showgirls, in costume, greeting the donors or maybe they stopped for the Mayor; who knows? About the only thing that really matters is they stopped and they donated.
Donations given to this challenge and to Goodwill Industries in general support a plethora of programs for families, Veterans, job building skills and eco-friendly projects.
Director of Community Affairs for Southern Nevada, Walter Lescano, says that the program’s donations never go into the trash. Over 816, 243 Nevadans donated goods to over 40 donation centers in Southern Nevada in 2015.
Those goods were either sold or recycled which generated funding that provided 12, 357 people with employment skills which led to their placement in sustainable jobs.
Lescano reiterated some facts from their printed materials, “For every dollar donated to Goodwill individuals earn $24 in wages, “It’s a strong return on investment of our community’s donated financial contributions”. We kept 25 million pounds of trash out of local landfills which protects our environment.

Mesquite has a continuous calendar of events year round. Casino events to organizations’ events, private parties, etc.; they all require planning, scheduling, and implementation. This having been said, I would like to give special thanks and recognition to a group of ladies who are continually helping these event planners. They are dedicated to providing the absolute best volunteerism to our community; they are the Mesquite Showgirls. They help with events as greeters, selling raffle tickets, directing guests to their table/seat and do it with grace, beauty, and a smile. Always in beautiful and entertaining attire, they are truly an asset to anyone who engages them for their events.
Of key importance is the fact that they do not charge for their services which, in turn, saves many of us countless dollars if we had to hire someone to do what they so eloquently do. In 2015 they officially became a 501c3 non-profit organization.
On Saturday, March 26, the Mesquite Showgirls need our support. Their first rummage sale will take place at the old boxing gymnasium also known as the old courthouse at 51 E. 1st St. North – it is adjacent to the community college. Donated items will be accepted on Friday, March 25th. To arrange for pickup or a different drop off date other than Friday please contact Renee at 702-856-9106 anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. I have m

Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue was started by Mark and Amy Meyers as a backyard hobby over a decade ago. After purchasing their first donkey Izzy as a pet, the Meyers’ began to notice other donkeys in their community that were in various stages of abuse and neglect. Not knowing exactly what to do, Amy began buying up these donkeys and Mark spent his evenings talking to the donkeys and fixing their various ailments. It was after the 25th donkey came into the Meyers’ home that they decided to open an actual Rescue.
