Dating back to the early 1900s with the establishment of the Berkeley Olive Association, the Berkeley Olive Grove 1913 organic olive oil is the product of a long and unique heritage. Nearly a century later, Darro and Olivia Grieco began bringing the historic orchard back to its full potential. Certified organic, the Berkeley Olive Grove continues with most current sustainable practices supporting both orchard and wildlife. Producing their first olive oil in the spring of 2008, all three oils won medals in competition. The 2009 olive oils each won awards which include Best of Class and Best of Show in the L.A. The Native Sons of the Golden West is a fraternal organization founded for mutual benefit, mental improvement, social activities and the progress of the State of California. To the pioneers belonged the birth and infancy of our State—to us, its destiny.
Native Sons are engaged in many activities designed to accomplish their stated goals:
Historical Preservation – Preservation and marking of historical sites and landmarks, as well as support of preservation efforts throughout the state, to keep alive the rich history of California.
Athletics – Local and statewide competition in softball, bowling, golf, bocce ball, and other sports activities.
Civic Activities –
- Dedication of public buildings to Truth, Liberty, and Toleration and the service of the people of California.
- Helping our counties, cities, and towns with projects designed to benefit all citizens.
- Support for organizations such as the California State Parks Foundation and many state and local historical action organizations
Columbia Museum – Sponsorship of a Native Sons Museum in Columbia State Historic Park in the Mother Lode.
Flag Day – Commemoration of the anniversary of the raising of the Bear Flag over Sonoma on June 14, 1846.
Charities – Support for all charities, especially the Native Sons of the Golden West Charitable Foundation which assists hospitals who help children born with cleft palates and other craniofacial anomalies.
Scholarships – A scholarship program designed for members of the Order and their family is currently being developed. For many decades, the Native Sons sponsored a public speaking contest for high school seniors. Now, in an effort to address the needs of a wider scope of California students, it is in the process of replacing that contest with a scholarship program for graduating high school students.
Essay Contest – Annual essay contest on California subjects for students in grade 4 in elementary school in the state.
Admission Day (Statehood Day) – Aggressive support of holiday status for September 9 as marking a critical event in United States history with the admission of California to statehood in 1850. The Native Sons sponsor an annual observance of this holiday to remind our citizens of our heritage.
Sierra Camp Area – Located on Lott’s Lake, Plumas County, this 50-acre parcel is open to all Native Sons and their families for old-fashioned camping. |
