Peoria Wins Multiple Awards

Peoria Sweeps Arizona Forward Awards
The City of Peoria receives three top environmental awards and an honorable mention.

PEORIA, Ariz. (Sept. 14, 2016) – Sustainability is at the heart of every City of Peoria initiative and those efforts were once again recognized by Arizona Forward. On Saturday, Sept. 10, Peoria was awarded three top Environmental Excellence Awards and an honorable mention.

“This is an exciting time to live in the City of Peoria,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “With forward thinking leadership, these award-winning projects demonstrate our commitment to sustainable practices as we strive to create a world-class city that is accountable to future generations.”

At Arizona Forward's 36th Annual Environmental Excellence Awards, the City of Peoria won the coveted Crescordia, which is the highest honor for a category, in three categories: the Peoria Sports Complex facility upgrades in Buildings and Structures, the Peoria Community Garden in Healthy Communities/Sustainable Communities, and the Peoria Desert Defenders superhero program in Environmental Education/ Communication Public and Private Sectors.

“Peoria is a fast growing city and how we address that growth is an opportunity and a challenge,” said City Manager Carl Swenson. “Striking a balance between the natural and built environment takes thoughtful leadership and the convergence of many disciplines and interests. The interconnected relationships between building structures, open space, the constructing of roads and many more factors will unequivocally affect our overall quality of life. Arizona Forward’s recognition of Peoria's sustainability efforts is a testament to the work that is being done to provide future generations with a healthier and more prosperous city."

Arizona Forward is a statewide organization that advocates for a balance between economic growth and environmental quality. Arizona Forward created the environmental awards to recognize those organizations and agencies that demonstrate green design and a commitment to protect natural resources. Peoria has a long history of building green and educating its residents about water conservation, storm water pollution, energy efficiency, and waste management.

“We are so proud to be recognized by Arizona Forward for the city’s efforts in advancing its sustainability goals,” said Deputy City Manager Susan Daluddung. “City staff is committed to bringing forward innovative projects and ideas that lessen Peoria’s impact on the environment. Our holistic approach also ensures that we protect our financial and natural resources while continuing to provide our citizens with Peoria’s trademark quality of life."
