City of Peoria Creates Informational Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of Peoria Insider! I am often approached by individuals who want to learn more about what is happening within the City of Peoria. They hear various information and see development occurring, but they aren't sure what exactly is taking place.

With so much growth facing our community, this is certainly understandable; and without direct access to information, it can be challenging to know what is happening right around the corner from our homes.

I want to change that.

I developed this monthly newsletter to ensure everyone who has an interest in our City, knows exactly what is going on. Whether you're a long-time resident, new to our community, or in the business of marketing our great city - this newsletter is for you.

Each month, this newsletter will include access to a Development Summary Report from Peoria's Planning and Community Development Department. This report outlines key projects and improvements happening all around our community, big and small. And, with the report broken down by Council Districts, it's easy to find projects right near your home.

Planning Case Mapping Application

In addition, each month I will conveniently include a link to our online Planning Case Mapping Application. As a fast-growing community, this is one of our most exciting tools.

This interactive map is designed specifically to keep the community informed about development activity by displaying projects that are currently under review, or projects that have been closed within the last 90 days. It's easy to use and by searching a general location or a specific address, users can learn more about land use and zoning information on specific properties in our city.

Each month I will also provide timely and relevant information about a variety of activity happening throughout our City, including important development updates, economic development in the pipeline, and exciting partnerships.

Peoria Insider is here to give you useful information about our community. It's News You Can Use every day.

Mayor and Council Pass Balanced Budget

Mayor and Council recently approved the adoption of the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget. This budget is balanced, maintains strong reserves, and is in conformance with the Council adopted Policies of Sound Financial Management.

The total budget of $590 million strikes a balance between available revenues and the needs of our fast-growing community. Above all, this budget reflects our commitment to Peoria citizens to provide exceptional core services and maintain the quality standards Peoria residents have come to expect.

With no increase to taxes, the budget includes additional staffing for public safety, the expansion of the Pinnacle Peak Public Safety Facility, construction of phase I of the Northern Community Park, and critical roadway improvements throughout the City.

I firmly believe residents should be able to rely on their local government to provide services and amenities in the most efficient manner possible.  As we embark on another fiscal year, I hope residents share my pride in knowing that through another balanced budget, the City of Peoria is here to serve them.

Peoria Shaping its Future Through General Plan

The City of Peoria is currently updating its General Plan, which guides growth and development over the next 10 to 20 years and beyond. This comprehensive document guides all aspects of the city such as growth, redevelopment, economic development, city services, parks and open space, health and safety, public facilities, the natural environment and more.

In order to develop a plan that is responsive to our community's needs, staff has been seeking public input at various city events, and through social media and online surveys. In August, the PlanPeoriaAZ Team and Economic Development Services staff will be hosting three business forums throughout the City. Local business owners are invited to share their thoughts about the resources they need to stay competitive and vibrant in an evolving marketplace.

As we chart our future as a city, these forums are an important opportunity for the business community to lend their voice in transforming Peoria's future. Please RSVP for a meeting held closest to you. For additional information, visit www.PlanPeoriaAZ.com.

Peoria Enters Into Ground Lease Agreement
with Plaza Companies

The City of Peoria recently approved a ground lease and license agreement with the Plaza Del Rio Management Corp., a division of Plaza Companies, a real estate development firm, for 14 acres of city-owned land at the Loop 101 and Peoria Ave.

The agreement allows Plaza Companies to construct an office/business park to support the city's Economic Development Implementation Strategy by providing office space needed to attract businesses to the city.

This agreement is a result of the 2016 Peoria Investment Forum, which showcased the city's portfolio of shovel-ready sites for new commercial office and industrial development to increase the city's inventory of suitable space to attract targeted industries.

Peoria's Investment Forum is an example of our intentional economic development strategy to bring targeted industries and their quality jobs to Peoria residents. We are proud to see the results of the forum materialize as this well-known and highly respected organization expands their footprint in our City.

Peoria Partners with the Arizona Small Business Development Center

The Peoria City Council approved the launch of the Arizona Small Business Development Center Network (AzSBDCN) in partnership with Maricopa County Community Colleges in Peoria.

The AzSBDCN provides a number of valuable services to businesses, including onsite one-on-one counseling for business owners, networking opportunities, educational workshops, and virtual counseling. The AZSBDC provides high quality, one-on-one counseling, resource assistance and training to preserve and create small business jobs and revenue, and facilitates capital formation.

Small business plays a critical role in Peoria's economy and it is through their efforts that we realize true innovation and growth. Peoria's Small Business Development Center satellite office is a great step forward to ensuring they have the support they need to thrive. I am thrilled to see this program come to life.

The AzSBDC is located at Huntington University at 8385 West Mariners Way in Peoria. For more information, call Kristin Slice, Business Analyst for the Small Business Development Centers Network, at 480-784-0599 or email Kristin.Slice@domail.maricopa.edu.
