35th Annual Christmas Parade and 63rd Annual Courthouse Christmas Lighting took place on Saturday, December 2, 2017.  Crowds were entertained with live band and cheer squad performances on Gurley Street.  Santa's tent was filled with excited children, pets and families during the afternoon. With approximately 12,000 people in attendance, the City's local businesses (especially downtown) were buzzing all day long!  The lights will stay lit until January 14, 2018 (Martin Luther King Jr. weekend).  Donations for the Courthouse Lighting will continue to be accepted at both the Jersey Lilly Saloon and the Prescott Chamber of Commerce until January 14, 2018.  PLEASE make checks payable to PRESCOTT CHAMBER FOUNDATION.

Tips from BBB

Scam Alert: Looking for This Season’s Hot Toy?
Beware of Scams
(Prescott, AZ - December 12, 2017) It’s the one thing parents dread most at the holidays: The List. Parents dread the list because there is always at least one popular-but-impossible-to-find toy every year that all the kids want. This year it’s Fingerlings, the cute finger-puppet monkeys. Unfortunately, the fact Fingerlings have sold out in many stores has turned them into bait for scammers. Con artists are selling counterfeit Fingerlings or simply making sales they don’t plan to fulfill. Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns desperate parents they may be the target of scammers with fake Fingerlings.

How the Scam Works:
You want to purchase Fingerlings for your kids or grandkids, but they seem to be sold out at every store you visit. Instead, you decide to search online. You come across a website, perhaps by clicking on a Facebook ad or other advertisement. The site may seem legitimate and feature images of the original toy and the company may even promise very fast shipping;however, many unscrupulous e-commerce sites have been scamming buyers.
In the past two months, BBB Scam Tracker has received nearly 20 reports of Fingerling scams. Consumers report being unable to contact the company by phone or email when their order doesn’t arrive. Others, who receive counterfeit toys, are told getting a refund is impossible.

Tips to Avoid the Fingerling Scam:
  • Only purchase from reputable retailers. Knowing the seller is the best way to avoid getting scammed. It is best to buy products directly from the manufacturer or authorized resellers.
  • Beware of unreasonably low prices. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. An extra low price, especially when toys are sold out at many well-known retailers, should be a red flag. Low prices are often a sign of counterfeit products.
  • Be cautious with your personal information. Don’t be quick to give out your name and credit card information to an unfamiliar company. First, call the provided customer service number to make sure it works and someone can answer your questions about products, payment and shipping.
  • Review BBB online shopping tips. Many online purchase scams use similar tactics. See BBB.org/shoppingonline for more advice.

About Home Safety

Haley Sisson - Mile High Property Inspections

I would like to discuss an area of big concern from a home inspector's view that many people never think about until something tragic happens. The dryer exhaust venting in your home. This is the piping that goes from wherever you connect the dryer to the outside vent. In many homes throughout the area, these pipes are flexible rigid piping. The ridges in this piping collect lint and it builds up until the vent becomes clogged. This piping is no longer permitted and should be removed from any home that has it. I believe the requirements changed in the 2009 IRC that the cloths dryer duct should be made of metal, with No. 28 gauge thickness, a smooth interior finish and a duct diameter of 4 inches. This does help to keep some of these exhaust vents from getting clogged but don't be fooled. Many of our dryer exhaust vents go straight up the wall and out through the roof. Smooth pipe or no smooth pipe, these exhaust venting systems clog. Although some of you clean out your dryer lint tray, lint still passes through and around and into the piping. If you can imagine, lint is normally damp until it dries and so it clings to anything it can. The side of the piping, the vent flap or the elbow in the pipe. Why it gets dangerous is because it builds up over time and at some point your dryer takes longer to dry, think about that, does your dryer seem to take a long time to dry? What happens when a dryer takes longer to dry? It gets hotter. As a dryer burns hotter it is raising the temperature in the venting system and it can become a fire hazard due to the flammability of the accumulated list. This is a very important and dangerous issue that goes undetected until something tragic happens. This issue goes undetected because of the obvious, out of sitgh, out of mind. The dryer dries, and if it takes longer, no big deal. It is a big deal. Homes catch fire all over the Country and burn down. Yes, because of  clogged dryer vents. If you do not know when your dryer exhaust was cleaned last, if you don't know where it is, if you have five children and do laundry four times a week, okay, every day, if you had your home built 15 years ago and haven't had it done, have it inspected by a licensed dryer vent contractor and make sure it is clean. Then put it on the calendar for every five years. This is important, this is your home, your family and your memories. To see photos of what clogged dryer exhaust vents look like, visit my website and click on "nightmare photos".

On another dryer note, if you have a home with a crawlspace and you don't know where your dryer exhaust leaves the home. Find out, turn on the dryer and go outside and look. Many more homes throughout our area vent into the crawlspace. This is not permitted and could cause health concerns. Dryers exhaust about a gallon of moisture with each load of clothes. If a dryer exhausts into a crawlspace, attic or any other building cavity, the potential for moisture related damage is significant. In this scenario, moisture is being added to an attic or crawlspace. Moisture being added to these areas could cause mold and mildew. All dryer vents need to exhaust outdoors. If you are unsure of yours, have it inspected by a licensed dryer vent contractor.

If you are a Prescott Chamber newsletter reader, and are in need of a home inspection for pre listing, peace of mind or a Real Estate transaction, I will offer you a one time $50.00 discount through the month of January 2018. Just tell me about this article and I will get your inspection scheduled.

I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!!
