Member Spotlight
Background: Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Lindy Furrow is a recent transplant to Prescott, Arizona. After volunteering in missions with her church and also as a former board member with the Verde Valley Chamber of Commerce, she and her family have settled here in Northern Arizona in Prescott. Serving over many decades in the final expense market, she is dedicating her focus with Hampton Funeral Home as their pre-need funeral planning specialist and participating in the Prescott chamber community.
When families are faced with end of life decisions, she helps families navigate through the pain and confusion of the usual myriad of details typically handled on the worst day of their lives,by planning now with inflation proof, transferable and affordable plans that simplify this important, yet often forgotten part of many families overall financial planning portfolios.
Company Description: Discover our home town treasure - Hampton Funeral Home - the ultimate provider in helping with healing experiences in the community. We share our heritage, vision, intention and the focus behind Hampton Funeral Home's reputation of quality, sincerity, and trust. Established in 1955 by Henry Clarence "Hank" Hampton Sr., Hampton Funeral Home and Cremation Service is a family owned and operated business, dedicated to helping families to cope with the grief of the loss of a loved one. Our office is located in a turn of the century house located on the national historic register at 240 E. Cortez Street just one block off of our lovely County square.
Henry Clarence “Butch” Hampton, Jr., is the current owner of Hampton Funeral Home and Cremation. A graduate of the California College of Mortuary Science, he is a licensed funeral director and embalmer for the state of Arizona. Butch also served 5+ years as a combat medic in the US Army National Guard. He is a member of the Arizona Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Butch was born and raised in Prescott, Arizona. Being well known for his generosity and active participation in the Prescott community, he served as president for the Prescott Frontier Days rodeo, and the Yavapai Silent Witness organization, where he is currently a board member.
What sets us apart: We own our crematory and we are certified licensed operators with the largest funeral home in the area. This is important for families to know where their loved one is being cremated and returned to them.

Tax Collection Scams
February 28, 2018
Tax collection scams are among the most stubborn cons out there. They reappear often, each time with a slightly different spin. The main theme is scammers posing as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and trying to trick you into either paying up front or sharing personal information.
How the Scam Works:
These scams often start with a phone call and take two basic forms. In the first version, the IRS "agent" says you owe back taxes and pressures you into paying by prepaid debit card or wire transfer. If you don’t comply, the scammer threatens you with arrest and fines. In the other version, scammers claim they are issuing tax refunds and ask you for personal information so they can send your refund. This information can later be used for identity theft.
These imposters often go to great lengths to appear real. The scammer may give a fake badge number and name. Your Caller ID may look like the call is coming from Washington, D.C., and in many instances, these scams start with a serious and official sounding “robocall” recording.
Tips to Spot This Scam:
You are pressured to act quickly. Scammers typically try to push you into action before you have time to think. The IRS will give you the chance to ask questions or appeal what you owe. Also, their first contact with you will always be by mail, not phone or email.
Payment must be made by wire transfer, prepaid debit card, or other non-traditional payment methods. These methods are largely untraceable and non-reversible. The IRS will never demand these forms of payment.
Tax Identity Theft
Another scam to look out for is tax identity theft. This occurs when a scammer uses your government-issued Social Security number to file a tax return in your name and collect your refund. It can also be someone using your information to get a job. Consumers don’t usually realize they have been victims of tax identity theft until they get a written notice from the IRS saying more than one tax return was filed, or they were paid by an employer they don't know.
Best Way to Avoid Tax Identity Theft
The best way to avoid tax identity theft is to file your taxes as early as possible, before a scammer has the chance to use your information to file a fake return.
If you are the victim of tax identity theft, contact the IRS at 1-800-908-4490. You should also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ftc.gov/complaint or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP. The FTC also offers a personalized identity theft recovery plan at identitytheft.gov.
Refund Advances
Some tax preparers offer Refund Advances, which are essentially short-term loans in the amount of your expected tax return, less the tax preparation cost. The upside of these loans is that you can get the money right away. However, you should consider whether receiving your refund a couple of weeks sooner is worth the cost of the tax preparation service. Also look out for large deductions from the refund amount to cover fees.
For more information on how to protect yourself from tax scams and to learn more about when the IRS may contact you, and how, please visit www.bbb.org. |
