Professional Writers of Prescott, also known as Prescott Writers, is a network of published and non-published writers and editors who live in the Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Dewey/Humboldt, and the surrounding area.

Among our members are writers of all persuasions and genres: poets, novelists, short story writers, memoirists, creative nonfiction, and writers of fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults. We aim for the highest expression of our craft and are dedicated to sharing our expertise with less experienced writers. See the PWP Meet Yourself feature for more information about our emerging and experienced writers.

Tips from the Better Business Bureau

Is That Facebook Quiz Legit?

In light of the recent revelation that Cambridge Analytica allegedly mined personal information from more than 50 million Facebook users, Better Business Bureau (BBB) is again reminding consumers what they share online can be used for illegal or unethical purposes.

Social media quizzes – particularly popular on Facebook – seem innocent but taking a quiz might mean giving away more than originally thought, and may include information about “Friends,” as well.

Social media quizzes ask seemingly silly or useless questions, but hackers can use the information provided to penetrate social accounts and gain access to personal information, or that of family and friends.

Some quizzes are designed to steal data in an outright scam. However, the latest news shows it isn’t just scammers who are interested in quiz answers. It turns out, personal information is big business.

Not all social media quizzes are about unprincipled data collection, but BBB cautions users to be careful about what they share online. Profile data, quiz answers and more can be used to steal money or allow a scammer to take on someone’s identity in order to steal money. Lastly, seemingly innocent information can even be used to build a profile that can be sold to anyone trying to influence society.

Tips to avoid social media scams:

  • Be skeptical. Before taking a quiz, figure out the creator. Is it a brand or site you trust?

  • Adjust privacy settings. Review social media account privacy settings and be strict about the information you share.

  • Remove personal details from your profile. Don’t share information like your date of birth, phone number or home address on social media accounts.

  • Pay attention and exercise caution. When someone sends you a friend request, before accepting, check out their profile to see if you know them. Don't accept friend requests from people you don’t know.

To report a scam, go to BBB Scam Tracker (BBB.org/scamtracker). To protect yourself from all kinds of scams, visit the BBB Scam Tips page (BBB.org/scamtips).

YRMC Health Connect

The Vein Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) is the first provider in northern Arizona to offer VenaSeal™ ablation therapy to treat varicose veins, spider veins and other symptoms of the vein disease, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

“Patients are very happy with VenaSeal ablation therapy,” said Anil Kumar, MD, FAAC, RPVI, Medical Director of the Vein Center at YRMC in Prescott Valley. “This new therapy does not require multiple injections to numb their legs, which can be painful or uncomfortable for people. Also, after VenaSeal ablation therapy, most people do not need to wear compression stockings.”

CVI occurs when the valves in the veins of the lower leg no longer function properly. This makes blood flow backward, which leads to enlarged or varicose veins as well as other painful symptoms.

“Chronic venous insufficiency can result in lifestyle-limiting lower leg pain, swelling, skin damage and ulcerations,” said Dr. Kumar. “It’s a serious condition that affects many people in our community.”

During VenaSeal ablation therapy, Dr. Kumar places a small amount of VenaSeal™ – a medical adhesive – into the vein through a narrow catheter. Once VenaSeal™ closes the vein, blood is immediately re-routed through other healthy veins in the leg.

“The procedure takes approximately one hour from the time the patient arrives at the Vein Center,” Dr. Kumar said. “Immediately following VenaSeal ablation therapy, the patient is ready to resume normal activities.”

Depending on the extent of the CVI, the patient may need to undergo VenaSeal ablation therapy a number of times.

“The good news is that VenaSeal ablation therapy works,” said Dr. Kumar, “and the patient is comfortable during and following the procedure.”

For more information about VenaSeal ablation therapy, talk to your healthcare provider or contact the Vein Center at YRMC at (928) 759-5890. The Vein Center at YRMC is located in the YRMC Del E. Webb Outpatient Building at 3262 N. Windsong Drive in Prescott Valley.
