Century Heritage - Serving the Mon-Yough Area Since 1936
Our History
The year was 1935; America was still recovering from the effects of the Great Depression. Credit union organizers all over the country had been working for more than a dozen years to spread the word to average workers that they could take more control of their financial lives by forming a credit union.
Forty employees of the Duquesne Works mill of U.S. Steel saw the potential in this concept. After much discussion and work, they pooled $240 of their savings and applied to the federal government for a credit union charter.
Their goal was to create a financial institution that they would own, a place where they could save and make small loans to each other. They received approval of their charter request and began operations on June 10, 1936.
By the end of the first year, the credit union had grown to 630 members and held nearly $15,000 in assets. Your membership helps us to continue this tradition of service to the Mon-Yough area.
Our Focus Is Our Community
Unlike many other financial services providers in our area, Century Heritage is focused solely on serving the Mon-Yough and Turtle Creek Valleys. We are not a division of some out-of-state conglomerate. We are a financial cooperative owned by and operated for the people in our area.
This focus has enabled Century Heritage to grow into the largest, locally-owned financial institution based in the Mon Valley. Since our staff, management and directors all live, work and worship here, we have a personal stake in the future of our area. We like to say that big banks have branches, but we have roots.
Our Difference Is In Our Structure
Century Heritage is a not-for-profit and member-owned financial cooperative. This means any earnings in excess of what is necessary to cover operating expenses or to fund required reserves is returned to our members.
Other types of financial institutions have to meet the earnings expectations of their stockholders, sometimes at the expense of their customers. At Century Heritage, those two groups of people are blended into one - you, the member/owners! Our only purpose is to help our members reach their financial goals.

The Safety and Training Department works to ensure the safety of both customers and employees. An Advanced Safety Professional is on staff who oversees the work of the National Safety Council instructors employed by Pittsburgh Transportation Group. These instructors teach defensive driving for all drivers, and also administer the drug and alcohol policies of the company. Drivers also receive instruction in fire safety and customer service. |

Joe Markosek was first elected to the House in 1982. Since then, he has worked to improve life for the disabled, raise the bar on education, fix roads and protect consumers. Among Joe’s greatest legislative achievements is his introduction of legislation, now law, ensuring appropriate standards of care for autistic children.
Joe’s career has been focused considerably on transportation issues. He was the catalyst in securing funding for the Route 22 widening project in Murrysville, and was instrumental in providing the Link (small) Bus system for the Monroeville area. He also introduced legislation calling for a feasibility study on creating a new Southwest Pennsylvania Regional Transit Authority, which would offer a larger and more efficient system to western Pennsylvania. In November 1996, Joe was appointed unanimously to a five-year term on the Allegheny County Port Authority Board of Directors, where he served until 2001.
Joe’s extensive ties to transportation issues make him well qualified for his position as majority chairman of the House Transportation Committee. As chairman, Joe serves on several statewide boards including the State Transportation Commission, which is responsible for evaluating the condition performance of the Commonwealth’s transportation system and assessing the resources required to preserve, restore and expand transportation facilities in the Commonwealth. He is the author of Act 44, the current Pennsylvania transportation funding law.
Joe has been active in the community with the Monroeville Drug and Alcohol Task Force, the Monroeville Chamber of Commerce and Knights of Columbus.
Joe was raised in the Scott Township section of Allegheny County and graduated from Chartiers Valley High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame where he received his bachelor’s degree in history and was active in sports and politics. Joe continued his education at the Duquesne University Graduate School of Business. He then joined the Westinghouse Water Reactor Division as a buyer of nuclear components and was sent to Three Mile Island immediately following the nuclear accident in 1979 as part of the repair/recovery team.
Joe enjoys reading, walking and photography. He has one son, Brandon.

We are a fine chocolate maker located in Southwestern Pennsylvania about 10 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. We specialize in premium Swiss chocolates -- thick, rich chocolates with homemade centers -- or luscious fruits and chunky nut clusters. You may be lucky enough to remember chocolates like this from your childhood -- but now we are unique. We are the exclusive chocolatier to the Pittsburgh Opera, and have been twice featured at the Academy Awards.
We have been in business since 1947. At that time, our founder, Dorothy Gastel, had been making confections of all kinds for gifts. But soon, there was such a demand for her chocolates that she decided to go into business for herself. Her decision coincided with the birth of her son, Robert, who owns the business today. Dorothy reasoned that she would be able to save a little money for Robert's college fund. Today, Dorothy's Chocolates ships more than 75,000 pounds of chocolate confections throughout the continental United States and Canada. The popularity of Dorothy's Candies is simply the result of one neighbor telling another. Our fame grows as one relative brings the chocolates to a family gathering, with the result that everyone insists on Dorothy's next time.
Many of our customers once bought chocolates from Dorothy when she made them at home in her basement in the Grand View section of McKeesport. Others shopped at her tiny "new" store on Versailles Avenue, McKeesport. Many of our customers, in far flung places of the world, started buying their chocolates in one of these locations, and have made Dorothy's Candies a delictable part of their holiday traditions.
Our candy chefs continue to make candy in exactly the same painstaking way that Dorothy insisted upon. We remain a tribe of perfectionists -- we want each and every piece of chocolate to be just right. Though Dorothy's Candies are pleasing to even the pickiest chocolate lovers, we don't call them gourmet chocolates. We simply won't charge the $25 to $75 per pound charged for gourmet chocolates! Real good chocolates for real people! Just like Dorothy wanted.
Although many other chocolatiers started out making chocolate by hand, very few do so today. Most manufacturers sell their chocolates in grocery stores and drug stores. Not us. We use no preservatives, so Dorothy's cannot sit on warm store shelves week after week. Dorothy's chocolates are made for each season -- fresh!
We believe that hand-dipped chocolate tastes much, much better. We also know that fine chocolate requires a special environment to ensure perfection and freshness when you buy it.
Even so, you'll find that our prices are about the same -- or less -- as many mass produced "fine" chocolates. So why pay a premium price for a machine shop candy when you can afford the premium hand-dipped chocolate from Dorothy's? |
