Whale Museum Volunteer Open House Today

The Whale Museum

 The Whale Museum is holding an open house for anyone interested in volunteering. If you have some spare time and are interested in our marine ecosystem, the museum has something for everyone! The program will take place on April 11. Drop by anytime between 5:30 and 7 pm. Museum staff and volunteer managers will be available to discuss volunteer opportunities and answer questions.

3D Printing is now available at your Library

After a few months of staff experiments and training, the San Juan Island Library is now offering 3D printing for public use. We have created items ranging from semi-useful (soap dish, cardholder, plastic bag carrier, fly swatter, cookie cutter) to ridiculously cute (cat ring, gnomes, dragons and the ever-popular and much-needed cork pig). To request that an item be printed patrons will need to fill out both an Agreement Form and a 3D Printing Request Form, both of which can be found on the website and also next to the printer at the Library.

Friday Harbor, WA – You are invited to join The Whale Museum for two special programs in April: the “Gear Up” Workshop for marine naturalists on April 22 followed by a CPR/First Aid Training through San Juan Island EMS.  On Saturday, April 22, the “Gear Up” Workshop will be held at the San Juan Island Grange Hall in Friday Harbor from 10 am to 4 pm.  Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for registration.  Invited presenters include: Lynne Barre (NOAA) on the status of Southern Resident Killer Whales; Sandie O’Neill (NOAA) and Suzanna Stoike (Puget Sound Partnership) on the status of water quality within Puget Sound; Jennifer Johnson (GSRO) on the status of salmon recovery in Washington; and Marla Holt (NOAA) on the status of ocean sound/noise in the Pacific Northwest.  The registration fee is $35 for non-members; $25 for TWM or SSAMN members.   A no-host reception will follow the session on Saturday evening at Mike’s Café & Wine Bar.

On Sunday, April 23rd, a CPR/First Aid Training will be taught by San Juan Island EMS staff from 9 am- 5pm at the San Juan Island EMS Building.  This training is designed to allow for marine naturalists to get certified in CPR/First Aid within a single day. The registration fee is $35 for non-members; $25 for TWM or SSAMN members. 

Friday Harbor Art Studio

Friday Harbor Art Studio and Custom Picture Framing is now operating by appointment at its new location, just 2 1/2 blocks from the old location, at 321 Geneste St. Howie Rosenfeld reports he's happy with the way the newly constructed Studio turned out and things are now sorted enough to continue providing the same picture framing services he has provided here for over 25 years as well as selling his own art work. SJI Farmers Market is looking for Volunteers

Want to volunteer? April is National Volunteer Month! The SJI Farmers Market is looking for volunteers this year! Specifically to: 
1.) Help deliver donated produce to the Food Bank at 1pm on Saturdays.
2.) Help run the “Veggie Valet” booth, which allows customers to drop off their purchases and either continue shopping or grab their car for curbside pickup. 
3.) Help run the NEW EBT (food stamps) machine during farmers market hours. 
4.) Help compile stock photography and content for the farmers market new website. Graphic design, website design, t-shirt design, and photography/video help is ALWAYS needed! 
5.) Help with special events, weekly trash pickup at Brickworks, and/or fundraising efforts.

County wide 2017 Great Islands Clean Up

Do Your Part to Make San Juan Island “Litter-Free by the Sea”!
All Chamber members (plus your families/friends!) are encouraged to participate in the County-wide 2017 Great Islands Clean-Up, which will be held on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. The Town of Friday Harbor does a terrific job regularly picking up litter from the sidewalks and gutters in the downtown area.

San Juan Island Yacht Club and the Town and Port of Friday Harbor bring annual boat parade, celebrating the opening of the boating season and an opportunity to meet and thank our first responders. Meet and Greet first responders 11:30 to 1:00. Cannon Start boat parade 2:20 at the Spring Street Landing.

Lunch Cook. Responsible for making panini sandwiches, mac n cheese, quiche and plating dishes. Help with morning prep and for making salads and soups during lunch hour. Food prep including side salads, pickling, dressings, Baking tasks including cheesecakes, crackers, pie dough, breads, etc. Make cheese boards and meat board, assist with pairings, design responsible for hot sandwich station, prepping, service, sanitation. Friday Harbor Labs annual OPEN HOUSE

This free public event offers a splendid opportunity to meet scientists and students at the Labs and to check out the research and teaching facilities.  From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Labs will be open for self-guided tours.  Visitors will be given a schedule of Open House events.  Also available will be a map that highlights the history of the labs and the development of the campus. Clay Therapy Workshops

Clay classes are offered for individuals wanting to learn hand building techniques with earthenware clay. Classes are 5 week sessions ,15 hours of class time, good for beginners or experienced clay enthusiast.  April 24- May 24. Monday and Tuesday class times available.  Classes have continuous demonstrations and are geared toward the individuals level and artistic goals.  San Juan Islands botanical and marine legacy is Belle Terre ceramics fundamental point of view for creative and applied techniques.  We believe there is a therapeutic and meditative component to working with clay and that is why we call our class CLAY THERAPY. Twilight Fun Run

Join SAFE San Juans for our 1st annual SAFE on the Rocks 5k in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month! This twilight fun run will feature glow sticks, glow paint, a post-race party with music, food, raffle lottery tickets, family-friendly activities, and much more! Even if you want to walk the route or just come for the post-race party starting at 8:30pm, SAFE on the Rocks will have something fun for everyone (suggested $10 event entry donation per family for those not walking/running)!
