Wolf Hollow and The Whale Museum’s Collaborative Wild San Juan Lecture Series

Friday Harbor, WA --The Whale Museum is joining forces with Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to host the "Wild San Juan" Series. The goal of the series is to learn more about wildlife, what's going on in nature, and how we can be better neighbors.

The next lecture in the series is on "Fawns, Fledglings and Fox Kits" which will take place on the first Friday in May - May 5, 5:30 pm at The Whale Museum. The series will continue on the first Friday of the month with: June 2 - "Songbirds"; July 7 - "Harbor Seal Pups"; and August 4 - "Explorers".

This exciting lecture series will feature local wildlife species & activities and how we can reduce human impacts which harm wildlife and their habitats. Impacts can include everything from removing nests/nesting material when working in the yard to vehicle strikes. Through becoming more aware of the impacts of our actions, visitors and residents of San Juan Island can learn to be better stewards of the wildlife that share their home with us.

Brickworks Spring Clean-up Party

Elena Porten

Hi All 2017 Farmers Market Participants & Vendors,

We are gearing up for the Spring Brickworks Community Cleanup Day! The Brickworks Spring Cleaning Day is THIS Sunday, April 30th from 10 am - 1pm!

We need everyone’s support in keeping the Brickworks space spick-and-span. This is a great opportunity for the Farmers Market Vendor Community to show our appreciation for the Agricultural Guild & Brickworks in helping to create a fantastic, year-round space for the SJI Farmers Market to thrive. Lets all show up on April 30th to put a little elbow grease into the community space that hosts our Farmers Market. Brickworks is managed and run by the SJI Agricultural Guild, which is a 501c3 nonprofit.

Bring your working clothes, some snacks (it’s a potluck-style event) AND cleaning supplies. We’ll have a playlist of groovy cleaning music :) Please spread the word to anyone in your network that wants to support the ongoing upkeep/maintenance of this amazing community event space. Even if you can only come for 20-30 minutes; every minute & every hand counts!!!

We prefer to have a general RSVP count, so we know how to delegate various tasks - if you can, let me know if you plan to be there & what you can bring.

Specific tools we need people to bring: weedwacker, lawnmower, weeding tools, windex/newspaper, supplies to fix our benches!, tools to dismantle artwork on chainlink fence, dusting supplies, gloves.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions, supplies, or ways to help with: parking barricades, cigarette-butt collecting, and signs/barricades that notify people they can’t park on the BW plaza (overflow from spring street businesses often use the plaza for parking) - we welcome them.

"The Last Gold"

Friday Harbor Film Festival

The USA Swimming-produced documentary spotlighting the 1976 women’s U.S. Olympic Team and the East German doping scandal.

Narrated by Emmy-winner Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), The Last Gold is a feature-length documentary film that reveals one of the greatest untold stories in Olympic swimming history. Forty years ago, at the 1976 Montreal Games, a team of doped East German athletes thrashed their rivals from the United States, until a remarkable final race. The central player was a transcendent American athlete denied her due and since lost in time: Shirley Babashoff.  Babashoff and her teammates were surrogates in a Cold War struggle, who battled a tragic conspiracy with a blazing honesty and a ferocious, endless tenacity.

In 1976, the U.S. Olympic swim team entered the Games in Montreal looking forward to its usual dominance. The men did not disappoint, delivering the most dominant performance in Olympic swimming history. They won every race but one, and in that race won the silver and bronze medals. For the women, it was a completely different story. They were overwhelmed by an East German machine that had emerged on the world stage in the lead up to the Games with frighteningly fast performances.

After battling through disappointing results throughout the competition, winning no races and facing a critical media that heaped on additional pressure, the U.S. women finally came together to do as a team what they could not do individually.   It was not until the final race…the last gold, when four young women stepped to the blocks to attempt to change the change the course of the competition.

This is their story.
