Special FRIDAY HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL Announcement:

The 2017 Friday Harbor Film Festival programs have arrived!  At 56 pages is it by far our most comprehensive program to date, which is a perfect way to celebrate our 5th Year of the Film Festival!!  We owe a very special thanks to the tireless efforts of our program coordinator: Ellen Roberts.  Also a special thanks to all our advertisers that made this program possible.  Our 2017 program will be distributed throughout the Puget Sound ferry system and selected locations in Seattle, Bellingham and Port Townsend for the next 2 months.  

Our 2017 programs can be found at the Friday Harbor Film Festival office on the corner of First and West, plus, we will also stock the racks outside.  If you have a location you want to share our programs with please give us a call or stop and grab a bunch to share.  So, please stop by and pick one up so you can start planning which films to see!   For 2017 we have 32 films and 15 shorts screening at six venues, all with in an easy walk from the ferry.  The San Juan Community Theater (Whittier and Gubelman), the Grange, Isle Seat, (next to 2nd Act), the Brickworks and the Palace Theater!

Also, our new website will be launching by September 1 with all the film trailers and lots of new information.  www.fhff.org...Our web page will also feature a new sign up for volunteers,  so its time to plan when to sign up for which films you want to be sure to not miss! 

If you are out of town and what us to mail you a program, just send us your mailing address, we are happy to drop it in the mail.

Announcing October Fundraiser for the Animals The Howl

The Animal Protection Society – Friday Harbor is thrilled to invite you to join us for the first ‘Howl’, a fundraiser for the animals happening on Saturday, October 28, 2017.  The Swinomish Casino and Lodge in Anacortes will be the site of our fundraiser expected to attracted hundreds of Halloween and pet enthusiasts from the San Juan Islands and surrounding counties of Skagit Island, Snohomish and Whatcom.  The fun includes a gourmet dinner, no-host bar, costume contest with cash prizes, dancing to Vancouver Premier DJ, onstage games, raffles, silent auction and our guest master of ceremonies, actor Neal McDonough.

October is National Disability Awareness Month. Would you like to learn about the supports and opportunities for disabled children and adults? On October 23rd, there will be a Community Meeting at 6 p.m. at the San Juan Family Resource Center, 476 Market St., in Friday Harbor. Representatives from the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and Washington Vocational Services (WVS) will share information about their services. Disabilities can include a variety of health challenges including PTSD, limited mobility, chronic pain and any other symptoms that prevent one from living life to the fullest. Thank you for sharing this information with other families and friends. 2017 FALL SOUTH SOUND MARINE NATURALIST TRAINING PROGRAM

October 21, 22, 29 & November 4, 5, and 19

 

Friday Harbor, WA – Registration for the South Sound Marine Naturalist Training Program, presented by The Whale Museum, is now open! The program will run on the following dates: October 21, 22, 29 & November 4, 5, and 19. The objective of this program is to provide a learning experience that assists adult graduates in becoming qualified regionally as professional or volunteer naturalists. Over the six days, classes will be held at various venues throughout the South Sound region of Washington (Puget Sound area):  Northwest Stream Center – Everett; Discovery Park Environmental Learning Center – Seattle; Seahurst Park Environmental Science Center – Burien; NOAA Sand Point Office– Seattle; Highline College Marine Science and Technology Center - Des Moines; and The Whale Museum -- Friday Harbor.

The main focus of the training is the ecology, current status and conservation of Southern Resident Killer Whales and other local marine species as well as discussions about the Salish Sea ecosystem.  The course includes presentations on cetaceans, pinnipeds, otters, intertidal invertebrates, seabirds, and other topics such as geology and marine conservation. Faculty includes Whale Museum staff, professional naturalists, marine scientists, and environmental educators active in the region. Students will also participate in a variety of field trips relating to the topics of study. 

There are no prerequisites other than high school graduation and a sincere interest to learn. Students provide their own transportation to and from class and field trip venues, including ferry fare to Friday Harbor and associated lodging costs. Carpooling is encouraged. Tuition is $500 for non-museum members and $450 for museum members/orca adopters. Registration can be done online at https://whalemuseum.org/pages/marine-naturalist-training.
