Friday Harbor Film Festival

Mission Blue  Legendary oceanographer; Sylvia Earleis is on a personal mission to save our oceans. Mission Blue is part oceanic road trip, part biography, part action adventure story, and part expose of an eco-disaster. The film deftly weaves her unique personal history with the passion that consumes her today: creating a global parks system for the ocean that she calls "Hope Spots".

 

Father Daughter Dance

Island Rec Tickets are on sale for Island Rec’s 13th Annual Father Daughter Dance. This is a special occasion for girls of all ages to get dressed up and spend quality time with their dads or….Treat your darling daughters to a special night out with music from DJ Doug, dancing and delicious appetizers and desserts. Girls receive a free charm and keepsake photo. The fun happens on Friday, Feb. 9, from 7-9 p.m. at the Mullis Community Center. Tickets are $25 per couple in advance and can be purchased at Island Rec’s office.

Montreal Guitar Trio Concert

Some islanders may remember ten years ago we had an incredible concert from the California Guitar Trio. Now it's the Canadian's turn (eh) when the Montreal Guitar Trio lands in the Whittier on Friday, February 9. The Whale Museum is holding two more open houses for anyone interested in volunteering with TWM’s Education Department. The open house events will be held on the following dates and times: 
Monday, February 12  10:00 am-11:00 am
Wednesday, March 7   1:00 pm-2:00 pm
If you have some spare time and are interested in our marine ecosystem, this is the perfect opportunity for you!  Education Department staff will be available to discuss volunteer opportunities and answer questions.

DIY Strum Stick Class

Island Rec is very excited to announce a do-it-yourself strum stick class. Strum sticks are essentially dulcimers that are played like a guitar and are simple to learn. In this class you will make a strum stick from a kit, which are being produced by a group of HS STEM students. You will also receive lessons on how to play the strum stick as part of the class and you’ll end up with a beautiful instrument.

The Whale Museum is holding a “Winter Birds of the San Juan Islands” workshop in partnership with San Juan Islands Audubon.  Taking place the weekend of February 23-25, 2018, the intent is to increase our birding skills through field trips and presentations.
This workshop is ideal for those wishing to continue their education as a naturalist or for those who simply love birds!

New Owners San Juan Vineyards

Michael and Lauri Corliss of Washington Vintners in Walla Walla, Wash who own, Tranche Cellars and the Secret Squirrel brand have purchased San Juan Vineyards from Swanberg. News of the sale is expected to be effective Feb. 1.  The couple owns three large plantings totaling 455 acres in Eastern Washington — Red Mountain Vineyards (350 acres), Blackrock Vineyard (50 acres) in the Yakima Valley and Blue Mountain Vineyard (54 acres planted) in the Walla Walla Valley.
