Explore the Salish Sea: A Nature Guide for Kids

The Whale Museum

Presentation and Book Signing with Author and Scientist, Dr. Joe Gaydos

Friday Harbor, Wash. – On August 29, come meet Dr. Joe Gaydos, one of the authors of Explore the Salish Sea: A Nature Guide for Kids, to hear about the launch of this book that hopes to inspire children to learn about the unique ecosystem that encompasses the coastal waters from Seattle’s Puget Sound up to British Columbia. This event will be held at The Whale Museum at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 29, as part of The Whale Museum’s Author Series. Dr. Gaydos will also be available to sign books.

Dr. Joe Gaydos is chief scientist for the SeaDoc Society, a marine science and conservation organization focused on the Salish Sea. He is a licensed wildlife veterinarian and has a PhD in wildlife health. For over a decade he has been studying the fish and wildlife of the Salish Sea. The SeaDoc Society published this book for the next generation.  In Explore the Salish Sea: A Nature Guide for Kids, readers will discover the Salish Sea and learn about its vibrant ecosystem in this engaging non-fiction narrative that inspires outdoor exploration. Filled with full-color photography and stories, this book covers wildlife habitats, geodiversity, intertidal and subtidal sea life, and highlights what is unique to this Pacific Northwest ecosystem.

This Author Series is free and open to the public. For more information, call (360) 378-4710 ext. 30 or email info@whalemuseum.org. The Whale Museum is located in Friday Harbor at 62 First St. N, 98250. Visit online www.whalemuseum.org.

Launch San Juan Islands”

EDC

Entrepreneurs can bring their business ideas to the next level in the third annual EDC Launch San Juan Islands business plan competition, created by the San Juan County Economic Development Council and sponsored by local businesses.

Participants will receive instruction in business planning and marketing, plus follow-up mentoring—and some will win cash prizes to help launch their businesses.

Thousands of dollars in cash prizes will be awarded to contest winners this year.  The greater goal, however, is to help every participating entrepreneur to advance their business.

Included in the program for all participants will be seminars on business planning, financing and marketing; opportunities to network and collaborate with other entrepreneurs; media coverage for contestants; professional advice from a team of experts, and feedback on business plans.

Launch San Juan Islands will start in September 2018 and run through November 2018. The cost to participate is $65 if registration received prior to September 18, 2018, or $85 thereafter.  Final entry deadline:  September 25th, 2018.  This fee covers direct costs for course materials and events.  Please see www.sanjuansedc.org/launch for more information.

The EDC thanks our funding partners:  San Juan Propane, Luxel, King’s Market/Valmark, the Islands Sounder, the Journal of the San Juan Islands, the Islands Weekly, Heritage Bank, Islanders Bank, San Juan County, the Port of Friday Harbor and the Town of Friday Harbor.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT Get to Know Your Community Foundation

What nonprofit projects are happening now? What resources are available to get a project off the ground? How can I best support the most pressing needs in our community? If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, the San Juan Island Community Foundation is a great place to start!

Founded in 1994, our mission has remained constant: to improve the quality of life of San Juan Island. How do we do it? By helping donors, non-profits and public organizations achieve their goals through direct grants, organizational assistance and philanthropic resource management.
Please join us at an upcoming meet-and-greet event Friday, August 31st from 2 to 5pm at our office at 640 Mullis Street, #104. Meet our staff, have a bite to eat and bring your questions about how we can help connect your philanthropic interests and goals to current opportunities in our community.

We’re excited to share the latest news as well as some recent staff additions:
Jeanne Peihl has returned to the Foundation as Office Assistant to support all administrative aspects of our work and to serve as the coordinator of our robust scholarship program.
Amy Saxe-Eyler joined our team in July as our new Financial and Communications Manager. Amy will be responsible for financial tracking and reporting as well as marketing and outreach efforts to increase engagement with nonprofits and donors.
Carrie Unpingco, Executive Director of the Foundation, adds, “Now that we’re fully staffed, we’re eager to start ramping up our outreach efforts to increase partnerships and continue to make meaningful connections among community members, donors and nonprofits. We hope you’ll stop by Friday or come to visit us another day during our regular office hours.”

The Community Foundation office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. For more information, call us at 360-378-1001 or visit sjicf.org.
