Weekend Workshop

The Whale Museum is holding an “In-Depth” Workshop over the weekend of October 18-20, 2019. The course begins on Friday afternoon and runs through Sunday afternoon. It includes evening lectures on Friday and local day field trips on Saturday and Sunday.

Laszlo Pal Filmmaking Award

Friday Harbor Film Festival is seeking entries into the 2019 competition for the László Pal Emerging Filmmaker Award. Recognizing young talent in filmmaking, it will be presented to the creator of the best student short film during the Festival to be held October 25-27.  All student films will be screened by a panel of film industry judges to determine the winner.

NHP Programs 160th Anniversary of Pig War

San Juan Island National Historical Park will be presenting a series of special programs from August 22 – 25, 2019 to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the 1859 Boundary Crisis known as the “Pig War.” The peaceful actions in response to the crisis ensured that no national battlefield need to exist and that diplomacy is always the best action forward. Pod Nods

The Whale Museum

Overnight marine adventures return this summer to The Whale Museum! These popular “pajama party” sleepovers are geared for children ages 6 to 11 and will be held on Friday August 23. Pod Nods are led by Museum Educators with assistance from other adult professionals.  Youth participants will learn to value whales and their environment through art projects, science labs, games, the traditional flashlight tour of the Exhibit Hall, and a bedtime movie.  We promise a high adult/child ratio and a whale of a good time!

Jazz at the Labs

The 19th annual Jazz at the Labs is coming August 24, at the Friday Harbor Laboratories, who will again host this popular event, with dinner and amazing music. $40 per person (dinner & music). This event will include a delicious and hearty dinner, served from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in FHL’s historic dining hall. Vegetarian dinners are available.

NOAA Emergency Response Division Lecture

On Thursday, August 29, Gary Shigenaka, Senior Biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Emergency Response Division (ERD) , will discuss “Oil spills and cetaceans: what we’ve learned from the Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon oil spills.” This lecture will be held at the Whale Museum at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 29, as part of The Whale Museum’s Lecture Series.

Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes is pleased to present their third annual jazz festival featuring jazz guitarist Brian Nova. Attendees will enjoy performances in the Meadow and on Lakedale’s lodge deck overlooking beautiful Neva Lake. The festival is open to all ages. It is produced by Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes, and food will be provided by Tina’s Tacos.
