THCC Hosts Second “Digital Discussion” with Pima County Attorney Candidate Laura Conover On Thursday, Pima County Attorney Candidate Laura Conover, alongside her campaign manager Edna Meza Aguirre, met with the Chamber’s CEO Isabel Georgelos in THCC’s second “Digital Discussion.” Ms. Conover is running for Pima County Attorney unopposed in November’s general election. Georgelos and Conover discussed many topics on Thursday, including her future plans as Pima County Attorney, types of criminal justice reform needed in Pima County, and issues of prejudice in policing. Conover also emphasized the importance of building community relationships as Pima County Attorney, “I want to shoot for the moon for being a well-represented office…I think there is something very important about prosecutors who read police reports and know personally the neighborhood or the intersection being described,” she said. “And the data shows, once prosecutors get to know their communities, the disparities in prison sentencing will go down.” Conover is a Tucson native, holds both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Arizona, and has been a practicing attorney for 17 years. She’s served in many roles, including as a defense attorney, in victim advocacy, and has managed over 400 federal contract attorneys in her experience. After November 3rd, she will be the first attorney in the history of the Pima County Attorney’s Office to be elected outside of the Office’s organization. University of Arizona Celebrates Landing of OSIRIS-Rex On Tuesday, the University of Arizona celebrated as the Arizona-led OSIRIS-REx mission made history by collecting the first sample of an asteroid. The satellite was majorly developed at the University in conjunction with NASA, a project with a $1.16 billion valuation. The satellite left Earth’s orbit in September 2016 and arrived at the target asteroid Bennu in December of 2018. It had been collecting photos and conducting observation until yesterday, when the satellite made history in six seconds by landing on Bennu and collecting a sample of the asteroid. Scientists are eager for the sample to arrive for analysis, as they predict a physical analysis of an asteroid could give us clues about the birth and evolution of the solar system. Bennu, the asteroid, is also in a trajectory to possibly make impact with Earth in around 150 years. OSIRIS will return before then with its sample in late 2023, after traveling 414 million miles in the span of seven years.
