Welcome our NEW Director of Events

What a fantastic opportunity! I am so humbled and honored to join the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Family. As the new Director of Events, I look forward to helping the THCC with its important mission to strengthen our local economy and support our hard working Hispanic business men and women. I hope to bring my long history of advocacy and organization for businesses and community efforts to my my duties. Given the fact that I started my own small business at the age of 19 and that my late father has been a small business owner in the sign industry for his entire adult life, I am sure you can see why I am so passionate about my new job. I am also proud and humbled to be named as a 2006 40 Under 40 Business Edge Award winner. My husband Miguel Ortega, and our 1 year old son, Miguel Valentin, are so grateful for this opportunity. Let's get to work!

THCC hosts a "City Budget Crisis" Brainstorming Session

The THCC has been vocal about its opposition to the proposed 1/2 cent sales tax increase on the ballot in November. However, the chamber has also committed to collaborating and assisting our City of Tucson staff in analyzing the budget crisis.

Last week, our chamber hosted a Brainstorming Session to identify any idea that may save the City money or assist during these tough financial times. Thank you to our members for attending and providing their comments during the three hour session. Our Public Policy interns, Elle Oviedo and Katey Sanchez will be working on many of the issues and formulating our community to the City Manager's office.

The THCC will continue to be active participants in the dialogue regarding the the City Budget. If you would like to provide your own comments, please contact our office and attend our next Public Policy committee meeting on Thursday, October 7th.

THCC supports Prop 401 - The Tucson City Charter Changes

The Tucson Hispanic Chamber voted to actively support the passage of Proposition 401. This referendum would significantly change the Tucson City Charter, at no cost to the taxpayers, in four main ways:

· Improve the accountability of the City Manager and department heads by eliminating civil service protection for department heads and their deputies and streamlines the hiring and firing process so that the City Manager is more clearly responsible for the everyday operations of the City.

· Index Mayor and Council salaries to the Pima County Board of Supervisors wherein the Mayor would make 100% of the Supervisor’s salaries (currently $76,600) and the Council Members would make 80% (or $61,280) and would go in effect after the November 2011 election.

· Allow the Mayor to count as a part of the Council quorum and grant the Mayor a vote to fire the City Manager, Attorney, Clerk and other department heads, an ability he/she currently does not have.

· Change the election process so that all seven seats are voted on in one year as opposed to the current staggered approach. The Mayor and three Council Members elected in 2011 will be for two year terms and all seven will be elected starting in 2013. This simple change will save taxpayers $400,000 annually, easily offsetting the $258,000 needed for the salary increases.

The City Charter was written in 1929 when 30,000 people called Tucson home. This will be the first major change to the Charter in 81 years! Please join us in supporting Prop 401 and you can find more information at www.yeson401.org.

Landing A Small-Business Loan

http://www.hispanicbic.org/

The Four Questions
The most important criterion banks use in determining whether to loan money is the ability to repay. Like other corporations, banks must answer to investors and stockholders. And unpaid loans make them look bad.

When a bank processes your loan application, it will typically ask some version of the following questions:

* How much money do you want?
* Is your business profitable enough, and does it have enough cash flow, to service the debt?
* Does your business have collateral to cover the loan?
* Is there a reasonable balance between debt and equity?

First THCC Job Fair a Success!

Lea Marquez Peterson

Close to forty employers gathered for the first Tucson Hispanic Chamber Job Fair co-hosted by Jobing.com. The Job Fair was provided as assistance for any job-seeker and those employers who contact the THCC seeking a diverse workforce. "Phone calls from those seeking employees are pretty common in our office. A Job Fair is an unusual offering from a chamber - but we thought it would be helpful to our business community!" responded Lea Marquez Peterson, President/CEO when asked why the THCC would develop such a program.

Approximately 250 job seekers attended the Job Fair held at the Viscount Suite on August 24th. The Viscount Suite, a chamber member was a supportive sponsor of the event. Several employers and job seekers were interviewed by Channel 13 KOLD and Fox 11 news that afternoon for their feedback. The event was promoted heavily by KLOVE and KVOI radio.

The Tucson Hispanic Chamber has received positive feedback from those who attended. The chamber's focus is to assist its members and the greater business community in recovering from the economic downturn. Businesses are slowly adding back employees and taking risk as sales gradually improve. The Tucson Hispanic Chamber plans to provide many new opportunities for its members to promote business growth. Thank you to all of those who participated!

Vote No on Prop 107

Vote No on Prop 107

The Tucson Hispanic Chamber opposes Prop 107. This proposition will limit the opportunities for women and minority owned businesses in our state to win state, county and local procurement contracts.

Pima County and the City of Tucson recently completed a Disparity Study that found there is a statistically significant disparity between the utilization and availability of minority owned firms in many race classifications when awarding contracts. The study also identified that women and minority owned firms (MWBE) showed a substantial decline when not able to participate in MWBE goals programs in other states.

All firms should receive an equal opportunity to compete for contracts. The existing preferential point system is a necessity for MWBE firms. The aforementioned study found that MWBE firms may lack key procurement business relationships and consequently be left off of preferred vendor lists without such a system. Without a MWBE goal program the usage of such firms would be drastically reduced. Our state still needs to improve - the study found that during a five-year period, MWBE firms received only 9.8% of all contracts in the general equipment and supplies category. The passing of Prop 107 will further limit opportunities for our over 50,000 Hispanic owned firms and other MWBE firms in our State.

Our business community is also concerned that the passing of such legislation will drastically affect the recruitment and retention of Hispanic and other ethnic minority students at the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. Our state cannot afford the additional negative publicity that this bill will bring especially after the passing of SB1070 and the ethnic studies bill.

Please vote no on Prop 107!

Lea Marquez Peterson, President, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Bill Holmes, Past Chairman of the Board, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Arizona boycott efforts may hurt Hispanics most

Steve Adcock is the founder and developer of SmallGovTimes.c

In a strange twist of ironic fate, the quick, rash decision by many people, organizations and cities to boycott Arizona businesses after passage of the state’s controversial immigration bill may end up hurting Hispanics the most.

Hispanic workers make up a fairly large percentage of the hospitality and service workforces in the state of Arizona – 30 and 40 percent, respectively, which includes hotels, traveling services and restaurants – all businesses that are directly effected by a boycott of the state. Especially during this time of economic instability and high unemployment, these boycotts may wind up hurting the very group of people that its supporters are attempting to help.

Hispanic Marketing: A Critical Market Segment

By Laura Sonderup, http://www.hispanicbic.org/

"Make no mistake, the integration of generations and diverse countries of origin within the U.S. Hispanic market has created a complex culture that requires experience and research to understand. What is needed for a successful Hispanic promotional campaign is a sensitivity to what is important to Hispanics - and senior corporate executives willing to initiate a reversal of underinvestment in the Hispanic market by creating new allocation levels in their business and marketing plans for reaching Hispanic consumers.

The opportunity is growing. The time is now."

Hispanic-Owned Businesses Growth Surges

Chris Roberts, http://www.hispanicbusiness.com/

The total number of U.S. businesses increased by 18 percent to 27.1 million in that period, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Census Bureau report. Hispanic-owned businesses increased by 43.6 percent in that five years to 2.3 million. That represents 8.3 percent of the total. The survey did not count farms.

10 Tips for Business Owner and Sales Manager for Increasing Sales

By Sam Williams, President, New View Group, LLC

10 Tips for Business Owner and Sales Manager for Increasing Sales
By Sam Williams, President, New View Group, LLC

1) Write or update your business plan. Everything is always changing, and the Great Recession has actually accelerated the pace of change. Discretionary purchases haven’t and won’t recover for awhile. Price, convenience and value are even more important than ever. So make certain that your Business Plan identifies these changes and that your offerings are properly repositioned. If you don’t have a business plan or need help updating it, the Hispanic Chamber can help. An excellent bilingual resource can be found at http://www.kutztownsbdc.org/course_listing.asp.

The Chamber can also direct you to Members who can help you write or update one:

ActionCOACH (Steve Douglass - sdouglass@actioncoachsolutions.com)

Bellows Consulting (Paul Bellows - paul.bellows@bellowsconsulting.com)

Vistage (Gary Hirsch - gary.hirsch@vistage.com)

2) Write or update your sales plan. A sales plan is more detailed than a business plan. The first part of a sales plan consists of an analysis of your existing client or customer base. It examines what percent of your clients are likely to leave. It estimates how much more of which goods or services you can sell to those who remain. It explores how many new clients you will have to add to make up for those lost and to meet or exceed you growth targets.

An Excel models is built that shows how many and what types of sales leads (opportunities) must be generated and processed through the various stages of the sales funnel in order to produce new clients and desired revenues. The plan then examines how to select and deploy your sales force to generate and to manage the targeted number of opportunities. A Chamber Member experienced with creating sales plans is:

New View Group (Sam Williams – swilliams@newviewgroup.net)

3) Hire and position the right people for the right sales jobs
. Account executives, also known as “Farmers,” are best suited to nurture and to retain existing clients and to sell more to them. Outside sales executives, also known as “Hunters,” are best suited to prospecting activities and to securing new clients. Technical sales representatives provide the expertise that is vital to retain existing clients and to help to close new accounts, but they aren’t particularly interested in prospecting or nurturing activities.

An excellent way to determine what sales roles best suit existing or prospective employees is to have them take DISC Profiles. DISC is an acronym that stands for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance. Classic profiles for many positions including sales jobs have been developed during the 60 years during which DISC has been in use. (One of the best ways to learn about DISC is to go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DISC_assessment.) Chamber Members who provide DISC assessments and assistance in hiring sales executives are:

TG & Associates (Debra Thompson - debrat@tgassociates.com)

New View Group (Sam Williams – swilliams@newviewgroup.net)

4) Perform background checks.
It’s always a smart idea to check references from supervisors and to run background checks on candidates. If you can’t get through to the managers with whom you would like to speak or they won’t tell you much, ask the candidate to provide you a copy of their tax returns for the past few years so that you can verify his or her claims of commission income. Those who balk often can’t substantiate the earnings claims they may have made to you. One Chamber Member skilled in this area is:

TG & Associates (Debra Thompson - debrat@tgassociates.com)

5) Train your sales manager and sales force. Once you have the right types of people in the right positions, the training that you invest in them will ‘stick’ and make them far more productive. The training should pay for itself in as little as one or two months. Chamber Members who provide sales and customer service training include:

For retail sales - ActionCOACH (Steve Douglass - sdouglass@actioncoachsolutions.com)

Business-to-business sales - New View Group (Sam Williams – swilliams@newviewgroup.net)

RPF’s, Bids – Summit Contract Management (Sandy DiCosola - sandy@summitcontractmanagement.com)

6) Craft the right compensation programs.
There are off-the-shelf assessments that can tell you what motivates your farmers, hunters, technical sales representatives, inside sales consultants, professional sales executives and business development managers. Create a mix of base salary, commissions, bonuses, praise, contests and recognition that rewards and excites them. Remember that compensation plans should be structured so that 80% of your sales force can achieve or exceed their targeted levels of total compensation. Chamber Members who can help to build and tune your sales compensation programs include:

For retail sales - ActionCOACH (Steve Douglass - sdouglass@actioncoachsolutions.com)

Business-to-business sales - New View Group (Sam Williams – swilliams@newviewgroup.net)

Printing sales - TG & Associates (Debra Thompson - debrat@tgassociates.com)

7) Set sales activity goals and meet frequently
. Once you have your qualified and trained team members in place, set sales activity goals for each type of position and then track the outcomes. Meet with individual sales representatives regularly to review their performance and to provide coaching tips on how to reach their goals.

Experienced sales executives usually don’t need to or want to meet more than twice a month. When you do meet, take a quick look at the DISC profile of each to remind yourself of what to do and not to do in meetings with that individual. Be sure to review each prospect in his or her pipeline, check to see whether of not the sales opportunity was advanced and work on next steps together. Newer representatives may benefit from weekly coaching sessions for the first three to six months.

8) Evaluate performance quarterly. Many sales managers mistake commissions and bonuses as a form of performance evaluation. Actually these are forms of compensation and are not substitutes for thoughtful evaluations. Some sales managers may formally evaluate performance only once year, but quarterly meetings are by far the most effective method.

9) Never stop recruiting new sales people. You never know when one or more key sales people may leave you. Also, you may cling to marginally performing sales executives because you have no one else with whom to replace them. My advice is to continually recruit. Keep the resumes of those candidates who looked promising. Interview candidates even if you don’t have an opening at the moment. While they will probably accept employment elsewhere, remember that about 30% of new hires don’t remain for a full year, usually due to personality clashes with their managers. If you stay in touch with the ones who showed the most promise, they may be interested talking with you again sooner than they know.

10) Reposition or fire fast. After a careful evaluation you may conclude that some sales people simply aren’t performing well in their roles. If you have performed DISCs on them, have placed them in the right sales positions, have trained and coached them and they still aren’t performing, help them to find a new career or company. Quickly. This process will be much easier and faster if you have already built up a stock of promising replacements. A Chamber member who is skilled in Tips 8, 9 and 10 is:

TG & Associates (Debra Thompson - debrat@tgassociates.com)

Sam Williams is a member of the Chamber and is a Board Member. He is president of New View Group, LLC, and can be contacted at swilliams@newviewgroup.net or (520) 390-0586. New View Group provides revenue development consulting to CEOs and sales skills and sales management training to B2B sales teams.
