NORTHEAST YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES RECEIVES $15,000 FROM
COMCAST FOUNDATION

Grant will be used to Support Tutoring and Enrichment Activities

St. Paul, Minn. – Dec. 26, 2013 – Northeast Youth & Family Services has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Comcast Foundation to support its Service + Tutoring Equals Pride (STEP) program.  STEP is a comprehensive, year-round program designed to improve the academic achievement of 62 elementary and middle school area youth who are underperforming academically and struggling socially.

"Programs like STEP provide a community-based response, in connection with our local schools, to address the achievement gap," said Jerry Hromatka, President and CEO, Northeast Youth & Family Services.  “The Comcast Foundation grant gives us additional resources to work with students who are at risk academically and who lack a connection to school, to improve their academic success and ultimately graduation rates.”

Northeast Youth & Family Services will use the funding for educational materials, including art and science supplies for projects and experiments.  The grant will also help cover fees for field trips to museums, theaters and other venues that provide participants with opportunities to expand their life experiences and positively impact their academic success.

"This outstanding community organization is taking an active role in improving the lives of local students and families,” said Mary Beth Schubert, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Comcast Twin Cities. “Comcast is proud to support the STEP program as it encourages youth to challenge themselves academically, and to pursue leadership and service opportunities.”

Northeast Youth & Family Services serves residents in the northeast Twin Cities metro area.  Each year, the agency works with more than 4,500 youth, families and adults to provide counseling, support, mental health education and other educational services.
