Event Description
These events are a part of the GameChanger Ideas Festival, a program of Humanities North Dakota.

Join us at the Empire Arts Center for two days of Humanities programming focusing on the "Pursuit of Health & Happiness".

September 6: A Conversation with Kate Bowler
As a theologian and professor at Duke Divinity School, Kate Bowler has no trouble tackling life's big questions. Then she was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer.

In her book "Everything Happens for a Reason & Other Lies I've Loved," Bowler speaks powerfully about the ways in which her brush with mortality transformed her. She frankly addresses the uniquely American concept that tragedy is a test of character, and looks at the different ways that people try to rationalize suffering and catastrophe, for better or worse.

September 7: A theatrical performance of "A Beautiful Hell"

Chronicling a mother's loss of her young son, this play is based on a book of poems by the same name. Presented by Theatre B, the poetry was written by North Dakota poet and grief counselor Carol Kapaun Ratchenski.

A panel will follow the performance.

Join us on October 13 in Bismarck for a full day of GameChanger speakers at The Pursuit of Health & Happiness. The GameChanger Ideas Festival is for people who never want to stop learning and growing. People who value being part of a community of lifelong learners who thrive on seeing issues from multiple perspectives and believe in making thoughtful and informed decisions on critical issues. If you value curiosity and exploring topics you've never even thought about before, this event is for you. Police officers, school teachers, stay-at-home parents, engineers, mayors, business leaders--we are all students of life.
We invite people to our stage who challenge the status quo and strive to make changes to critical systems that honor our shared humanity. We believe that civil disagreement and debate are stepping stones for learning. The GameChanger Ideas Festival does not take political stances on issues. Instead, we strive to offer a variety of viewpoints from people with both scholarly insight and hands-on knowledge. These aren't just people with good ideas, but people who have put their ideas into action in the real world. Join us for the GameChanger ideas festival: The Pursuit of Health and Happiness.
