Stops will include the Advent Church in Burr Oak, and the Burr Oak Cemetery where a monument commemorates two brothers, one who died in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War and his brother who died fighting with Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Traveling west and south, visits to St. Agnes Catholic Church Cemetery, Plymouth Rock, where many Irish settlers in Winneshiek County are buried, the Leon Brown farm in Orleans Township where he maintained a zoo to benefit the Iowa Crippled Children and Adults Association, and St. John’s Lutheran Church ruins and cemeteries will explore their contributions to the county’s local history.
A visit to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, cemetery and school museum in Spillville will explore the contributions of the Czechs. There will be guides on the bus, step-on guides at some of the locations and guided tours at several others sharing the history that has unfolded at each of the venues.
Information on the areas’ geology, physical features, history and points of interest as the tour group travels between each stop also will be shared. The group will finish the tour with coffee, cider and treats at the Landers-Adams house on Broadway and participants will be invited to offer their suggestions for a similar trip planned for next year.
Everyone is welcome to participate. Trip cost is $50 for both Winneshiek County Historical Society members and non-members and includes a Czech-themed lunch served in Spillville.
Payment for the trip’s transportation is due by Friday, Oct. 26. Checks for $50 may be sent to the Winneshiek County Historical Society, Box 63, Decorah, Iowa 52101.
