Monroe County Museum is pleased to again present a showcase of quilts on loan from all over south Alabama in an exhibit which is free to the public. The exhibit will run from March 1st – March 29th during the museum’s regular opening hours of Monday – Friday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and Saturdays, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Please join us for an opening reception on Tuesday, March 5th at 10:30 am for a presentation on quilts by Betty Kennedy of Gaines Ridge in Camden, followed with the serving of light refreshments.
Displayed in the courtroom made famous by the film version of To Kill a Mockingbird, quilts will be draped over the backs of the courtroom benches and hanging from the balconies. Designs will range from the traditional to one-of-a-kind originals. A featured item available for sale in the Bird’s Nest Gift Shop is the Museum’s Legacy publication, Cotton Country Quilts, written by Monroe County native Mary Elizabeth Johnson Huff.
Raffle tickets will be for sale throughout the exhibit for a quilt made and donated by Betty Kennedy to help raise funds for the museum.
On Thursday, March 28th the museum will host an afternoon tea from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm in conjunction with the quilt exhibit. Ladies are encouraged to wear hats and gloves; likewise, gentlemen in coats and ties. The winner of the quilt raffle will be announced at the tea.
