Decorah Public Library announces September book discussions
Decorah Public Library staff are hosting three book discussions in September. The groups are open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested should call the library at 382-3717 to learn more or to reserve a book.
The Happy Hour Book Group will meet at Rubaiyat on Wed. Sept. 11th at 5:15 p.m. to discuss Julia Phillips’ “Disappearing Earth.” One August afternoon, on the Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern tip of Russia, two girls go missing. The police investigation turns up nothing, and in the girls’ tightly-woven community, everyone must grapple with the loss. But the fear and danger of the disappearance is felt most profoundly among the women of this isolated place. Taking us one chapter per month across a year on Kamchatka, “Disappearing Earth” connects the lives of characters—a witness, a neighbor, a detective, a mother—changed by the abduction.
