Luther College Center Stage Series presents: Jayme Stone's Folklife
Community Event Art Performances & Education Calendar
— Jayme Stone is a musician, composer, producer and a banjo master. His latest album, Jayme Stone's Folklife, brings together a variety of accomplished folk musicians who breathe new life into a treasury of old songs, remaking them for modern ears. The Luther College Center Stage Series presents Jayme Stone's Folklife at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.
"I'm so excited to present Jayme Stone's Folklife, not just because of their virtuosity but also the variety of folk styles they explore. I'm reminded of Ken Burns' recent documentary "Country Music" --both the documentary and Jayme Stone connect music to regional and American history in a way that is so rich and meaningful," says Kristen Underwood, director of campus programming.
The album is a musical journey through the Appalachians, the Sea Islands and the Caribbean. With spellbinding singing and virtuosic playing, the repertoire reaches into the arcane corners of American roots music with shape note hymns, Gullah spirituals and Creole calypsos. It features Grammy-winning songster Dom Flemons, cornetist Ron Miles, singer Felicity Williams, singer extraordinaire Moira Smiley and more.
"I'm thrilled that the remarkable Moira Smiley is part of the ensemble. She was here several years ago leading a community singing workshop. There's a lot of excitement about her return to Decorah," said Underwood.
