The Old West Returns of Cripple Creek – 1952 Western Movie Screening
A special one-night only showing of the 1952 Western movie Cripple Creek will take the stage of the Butte Theater Saturday, April 4.
The film will be part of a western evening of fun set to raise funds for the historic theater. Doors open at 4:30 with them movie at 6 p.m. A suggested $10 donation to the Butte includes the film as well as a chuck wagon dinner. Attendees will also get the chance to bid on an original poster from the 1952 film, in which George Montgomery starred. Western attire is encouraged so put on your best saloon girl, Victorian and western duds.
While the film was not produced in Cripple Creek, it does follow a gold rush theme. The film is based on a federal agent (Montgomery) and two colleagues who infiltrate a gang of gold-rush gold smugglers. Instead of stealing gold bars, the outlaws are stealing high grade ore, having it smelted, and then having it plated to look like lead. The Government sends agents Bret (Montgomery) and Larry (Jerome Courtland) who arrive in Cripple Creek posing as Texas gunfighters. While their partner, Strap (Richard Egan) works on the inside as an informant, Bret finds the smelting operation and Larry learns of the payoff. The crooked town Marshal is suspicious of the two men. The reply of his inquiry to Texas exposes them, putting their lives in danger.
