Details:As the busy harvest season continues, the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce (DACC) encourages all farmers to take time to care for themselves. During the harvest season, the DACC Ag Committee will travel the countryside in the southwest quadrant of Winneshiek County distributing bags filled with provisions to every field worker they find. The bags include everything from water to work gloves and much more, all donated by DACC member businesses. Kristina Wiltgen, DACC Executive Director states, “Weather permitting, we'll distribute 180 bags on Wednesday, October 14th. Our goal is to meet farmers while they're in action and remind them to take care of themselves during the harvest season. We hope that by bringing them provisions right in the fields they know how much we appreciate their contributions to the community."

The Stay Safe, Take a Break project is supported by more than 35 local businesses and organizations, including local 4-H and FFA students. "This level of cooperation and generosity reminds me once again that we are part of a generous community and we are eager to support each other," commented Wiltgen.

The Stay Safe Take a Break project began in 2004 in an effort to help fight farmer fatigue and keep workers safe in Winneshiek County during the fall harvest season. The program was designed to be implemented over a four-year period with bags delivered each year in a different quadrant of Winneshiek County. The program is now in its 17th year and making its fifth round of distribution around the county. Farm safety is an important issue year-round. When farmers are harvesting, the importance of safety comes to the forefront. Winneshiek County is home to more than 2,000 active farms which produce hogs, dairy and beef cattle, corn, soybeans, hay, and produce. The DACC realizes that many farmers are trying to make the most of all relatively sunny and dry days and want to encourage everyone working long hours to take adequate breaks to ensure their own and others safety. For more information on how you can contribute to this and other ag-related programs, contact the DACC at (563) 382-3990.

The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization with a mission to be the trusted resource in the business community for advocacy, collaboration, and education.
