Event Description

Join The Bookshelf on Church + The Lancaster Community Library for our Right to Read Night, an evening dedicated to celebrating the freedom to read and the power of diverse stories. This month’s featured book is Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson — a powerful story that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual. Recommended for grades 6–10, Chains invites readers to reflect on courage, freedom, and resilience.

At a time when more books are being challenged or banned than ever before — especially those by and about people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community — it’s vital to stand up for the right to read. The First Amendment protects access to ideas, and public schools and libraries must represent the broadest range of voices and experiences. Every reader deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories on our shelves. Books spark empathy, inspire change, and can even save lives.

Please RSVP here on the website. The book is available at The Bookshelf on Church and can be reserved online. We encourage participants to read the book ahead of time and come prepared lend your voice to this important conversation and celebrate the freedom to read!
