The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies and Arte por Vida would like to invite you to our 3rd Annual Gran Baile!
This event will take place on Friday, April 24th, 2026, from 5-10pmat the National Hispanic Cultural Center. We are excited to host the backyard Baile at NHCC again this year, this helps us serve our communities in preservation of New Mexico, arts, culture and heritage.
Stories about New Mexican Hispana/o people have been told from acolonial perspective for centuries. The University of New Mexico’sDepartment of Chicana and Chicano Studies (CCS) is committed tocreating opportunities for Nuevo Mexicano artists to share their stories withcommunities and students across the greaterSouthwest to help evolve thenarratives about our people.In this series, we strive to preserveNewMexican arts as a vital part of human history and to serve as a reflection ofsociety’s norms and beliefs.The value of these art forms lies in theiraesthetic appeal and ability to educate, inform, and inspire.Moreover, these forms of cultural production entail the need for research,investigation, and knowledge dissemination. By preserving and sharing NewMexican art forms, future generations can better understand the historicalcontext of the artwork and learn about their cultural heritage, whiledeveloping a sense of pride and connection to their history.UNM’s “NM Arte Por Vida Series”can also evoke emotions through thebeauty, creativity, and innovation of the artwork, thus preserving art forfuture generations to ensure that our cultural heritage is passed on toposterity.
