------
CARMELA — Seeking a young Latina actor to play our heroine who is between 8-12 years old. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. The ideal candidate is a very alive and exuberant young person who can believably play a young Tejana reconciling her family and community shaped by separation across borders and the realities of mixed status life. Candidates should enjoy dancing and singing (even if they don't do either so well). Though we are looking for a young actor to play Carmela, this actor does need to have enough maturity to play the final scenes of the play in grounded and honest ways.
MIGUEL — Seeking a Latino actor to play Carmela's teenage brother Miguel. Actors must be able to believably inhabit the body of a young Tejano male-identifying person between age 12-15. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. Miguel is a young man attempting to reconcile the absence of his beloved father while learning to care for his younger sister and honor his protective mother who may not understand him fully. Miguel is also actively organizing his relationship to his blended American culture. He moves fluidly between Spanish and English, home and public selves. Ideal candidate is a dynamic movement-based actor with access to deep emotional truth telling. Movement-based skills like skateboarding, bike riding, rollerblading, or dance athleticism are a big plus.
PAPI — Seeking a dynamic, character driven, and movement-based Latino actor to play Papi, Carmela's father. This character exists only as memory and nostalgia within the piece. Seeking an actor who can believably play a Mexican father (most likely originally from Reynosa or a nearby border community) between the ages of 30-50. Because Papi only lives within Carmela's mind in the story, we feel his absence when he is not present onstage. This requires an actor of prodigious stage presence. Papi is a memory shaped by love, longing, and imagination. This framing makes singing, dancing, instrument playing, humor/comedy, folklórico and any combination of those talents a plus. The absence of the father is an operatic idea within the piece and we are seeking an actor who can fill the shape of that hole. Actor plays multiple characters in the piece and so dialect work is a plus.
MAMI — Seeking a dynamic, character driven and movement based Latina actor to play Mami, Carmela's mother. Seeking an actor who can believably play a Tejana mother between the ages of 30-50. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. Ideal Candidate is a character actor of great emotional depth with extraordinary transformational acting and dialectic abilities. While Mami does not have to be a great singer, most ideal candidates can sing in the folksy, intimate style that mothers lullaby their beloved children with. Actor plays multiple characters in the piece.
DANCER — Seeking an additional actor dancer to embody some of the more surreal, whimsical, and emotionally heightened ideas within the piece. Seeking a male identifying dancer who can believably be a silhouette doppelgänger for Papi (rooted in the emotional logic of Carmela's memory). Dancer will embody farm worker/s, Anatoli the cat, the spirit of the dandelion, and will do some folkórico movement. Ideal candidate has a variety of movement-based skills including everything from more folklore-based dance experience to balletic and postmodern movement. Acro and or any other movement based skills like clowning or stilt work are also a plus.
