The Valdres Lodge 1-503 Sons of Norway meeting will feature speaker Darrell Henning who will share an illustrated prorgam on “Norwegian Architecture on the American Landscape.”
“We are all immigrants in this land as well as the product of our culture, cultural environment and physical enviroment," Henning says. "The program will use the Norwegian experience and examine the building traditions or architecture of this immigrant group -- the origins and development of several building practices and their subsequent manifestations in the New World.”

The lodge will hold a brief business meeting at 7 p.m., immediately followed by the program and a fellowship hour. All members and guests are invited and welcome to attend.Those attending are encouraged to bring finger foods to share.

Henning is a native of Decorah. He attended Luther College briefly and graduated from the University of Missouri with a B.A. in anthropology/archaeology and earned his M.A. in history and museum studies at the Cooperstown Graduate Program in NewYork. Henning worked at the Nassau County Historical Museum (Old Bethpage Village Restorations) Long Island, N.Y., for five years, before returning to Decorah as curator of Vesterheim.

At Vesterheim he received a National Humanities Grant to study rural architecture in Norway. Henning retired from the museum in 2001, after serving as curator, director and again as curator. He has published articles on Norwegian-American archihitecture and Vesterheim's collection and presented papers in both Norway and the United States, notably at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and the Norsk Institutt for Kulturminneforshning, in Oslo, Norway.
