Contra dances are “called dances” (in the same way that square dances are called), The caller teaches the movements, and prompts dancers so that the movements fit with the music. Many of the dance steps are similar to those in square dancing, though contra dances are traditionally done in lines rather than squares.
Local caller Bill Deutsch will teach, coach and encourage dancers through an evening’s worth of dancing with humor and fun. Previous dance experience and partners are optional – both will be provided. A donation of $7 per person to cover expenses is much appreciated, children 12 and under free.
The Western Home String band includes musicians on fiddle, mandolin, bass, guitar and Irish drum, playing lively reels, jigs and waltzes, both old traditional and new timey tunes, some of them composed by local musicians.
