Struve’s program commences with “Strike the Viol” and “If Music Be the Food of Love” by Purcell, two selections which invite the audience to celebrate the gift of music. The program continues with an exploration of mortality in Finzi’s song cycle “Earth and Air and Rain,” with poetry by Thomas Hardy. Struve comments, “The poetry and music address the struggles associated with finding purpose and meaning in a world where death is assured and life is precious.”
The second half of the program features a setting of American folk songs by Steven Mark Kohn as well as Bernstein’s “Simple Song.” Struve reflects on the selection of these pieces, “The Kohn folk songs focus on finding a sense of belong in texts and musical settings that range from deeply poignant to sardonically humorous. Finally, the biblical text of ‘Simple Song’ exhorts us to sing with joy and thanksgiving for the life we have been given.”
Struve has served as one of Luther’s voice faculty since 2008, as well as an instructor in Luther’s Paideia program since 2012. He currently holds the position as the governor for Iowa’s district in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Jonathon specializes in art song literature, with a particular interest in English and German art song. His dissertation explores the cabaret songs composed by Friedrich Hollaender.
