Description:
On September 11, 2001, the deadliest terrorist attack in human history occurred when terrorists crashed four hijacked passenger airplanes into the World Trade Center twin towers and the Pentagon. 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers, and 8 emergency medical technicians who responded to this horrific event lost their lives. Many more died months and years later from 9/11-related cancer and respiratory diseases.
Every year, memorial stair climbs are held across the country in memory of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians, and civilians climb the equivalent of 110 stories of stairs, representing the 110 stories of the twin towers. This event is not a timed race, but rather a way for first responders and the community to honor those who selflessly gave their lives.
On September 11, 2019, Shoshone County Fire District #1 will hold its third annual 9/11 memorial stair climb. This event will take place in Wallace, Idaho and start at 8:30 am. We are inviting first responders and community members from surrounding areas to participate in this event.
Participants can purchase t-shirts for $15, which partially covers the cost of the shirts. However, there are other costs are associated with the event. Memorial ID cards of fallen 9/11 heroes and refreshments will be given to participants. Stair maintenance before and after the event will be provided to the City of Wallace. We are also raising money for the Jeff Welch Memorial Fund, which assists families of law enforcement officers and firefighters in the event of line-of-duty catastrophic injury or death. All proceeds from this event will go to this nonprofit.
