FEDERAL INDIAN LAW & POLICY

Description:
The Federal Indian Law & Policy course is an 6-week online program that is aimed at providing tribal, federal, and state government employees and political office holders with an in-depth understanding of the government-to-government relationships that exists. The course will cover foundational case law, important legislative action, current Native American issues. Subjects to be covered include A History of Federal Indian Policy, Indigenous Governments, Individual Indian legal Status vs. Racial Status, Indian Gaming, Indian Activism, Indian Political Participation, and Images, Media & Stereotypes, among others. Each lecture will have a reading assignment and a follow-up quiz to monitor the progress of each participant. Class progress will be closely monitored by the instructor, with whom each participant will have access to. The course Instructor will be Dustin Jansen, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. Dustin is an Assistant Professor at Utah Valley University, specializing in American Indian Studies. Dustin is also a practicing Attorney, works as a Tribal Court Judge for the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation, a pro tem Judge for the Zuni Pueblo; and, as a Hearing Officer for the Navajo Nation Office of Hearings and Appeals. Participants will be using the text American Indian Politics and the American Political System by David E. Wilkins. THIS CLASS IS A NON-DEGREE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM. Book not included.
