. The event open to the public with no charge for admission. Samatar is a highly awarded writer of speculative fiction (fantasy & science fiction), as well as a professor of African and Arabic literatures at James Madison University.
Samatar’s lecture will involve readings from her work, discussion of the process of creative writing and how she uses speculative fiction and fantasy as environments to discuss issues of race, gender, geopolitics, family and love.
"I’m thrilled that we’re able to make Dr. Samatar’s event open to the public," said Andy Hageman, professor of English. "Her capacity to fuse powerful storytelling with core matters that affect how we live individually and socially in the world speaks to everyone."

During her time in Decorah, Dr. Samatar will also be speaking with a Paideia 450 class focused on race and speculative fiction that Hageman is currently co-teaching with Novian Whitsitt, professor of English and Africana Studies.
"I think Dr. Samatar’s visit can inspire all of us to think about how we value and communicate with people who bring different expertise and experiences to the futures we’re all designing together every day," said Hageman.
