DECORAH, Iowa —Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to get creative with food during Barnetimen (Children’s Hour) at Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center on Tuesday, January 21, from 10-11 a.m.
“This month, we’ll learn about interesting tools to make fun Norwegian foods. Then we’ll use our imaginations to make pretend smørbrød (Norwegian open-faced sandwiches) out of recyclables, before mixing and matching edible ingredients for a real snack,” Jennifer Kovarik, Vesterheim Youth Educator, said. Meet in the lobby of the museum’s Main Building.
The program is free, thanks to sponsors David and Brenda Carlson, Greg and Karen Bruening, Amy and Keith Bruening, and Norwegian Mutual Insurance Association. Barnetimen meets at Vesterheim Museum the third Tuesday of each month, September-April.
The program is geared toward 3 to 5 year olds, but all ages are welcome. No sign-up is necessary—come to one session or all of them. Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center, in scenic Decorah, Iowa, showcases the best in historic and contemporary Norwegian folk and fine arts, and explores the American immigrant experience. This national treasure includes world-class exhibitions and 12 historic buildings. It is also a center for folk-art education, offering a wide variety of classes in authentic Norwegian folk art every year.
